F/1

How wonderful to have the junior students back in the music room this week! I had so much great feedback from students and families about the remote learning activities we did, and it is good to know that our music program could still continue, in spite of learning from home.

You can see in this week's video that movement and playing are a big part of what we are doing in the music room at the moment. Children are able to express themselves in all sorts of different ways - from dance moves to patterns on the drum - and even if you feel a bit shy, you still have freedom to contribute within your "comfort zone"! I am heartened to see so many of our new students enthusiastically joining in the singing, playing and moving, and coming up with all sorts of ideas. The children are doing a great job of keeping the music room safe and fun!

This week we continued to work on the song Yonder Come Day. The students learned the phrase "G G E G", which are the notes to the first line "Yonder Come Day". However, they then had to work out the notes to the rest of the song on marimba. This involved a lot of listening and experimenting, but they managed to work out a lot of the notes by listening to the tono alto (high pitch) and tono bajo (low pitch).

The students are also making great progress on the ukulele chords - it can be tougher than they think! The objective is for them to play ukulele on Yonder Come Day while their partner plays their part on marimba. They are also going to learn the chords to Chivita Chivita - this Spanish song is becoming a real hit across the school (see the video below)!

4/5/6

Who knew the older kids loved singing so much? No sooner have we finished singing Here Comes the Sun as a warmup, that they're asking to sing it again! We will have a performance for this particular item organised before the end of term - it will be all students across the entire school. Over 300 of you!

I am amazed at the progress the older children are making on ukulele. At the moment we are focusing on the chords C, F and G, as they are used in the song Chivita Chivita (see below). By working in pairs, they have an opportunity to watch, help and learn from their partner. For those who are feeling comfortable with the chords, they can level up by focusing on the chord changes in the song. Our goal is to play along to the song with marimbas, guitars, keyboards and ukuleles.
