WHERE CHILDREN LOVE TO BE

YEAR 1/2 NEWS

READING

During Readers Workshop, we have been learning to record our thinking as we read. We have been using different sticky note strategies to record our thoughts. We then explain our thinking further in our Readers Notebook.

WRITING

In Writers Workshop, we have been learning about the writing cycle.  We started by learning how to come up with ideas. We used our special writers’ notebooks to brainstorm ideas of things we can write about. The next step of the writing cycle is planning. We have been planning a procedure, a narrative, a snapshot and a description. Next week we will be learning about drafting.

MATHEMATICS

In Maths, we have been learning about place value. We have also learnt new warm up games.

The first new warm up game we learnt was the card flip challenge. We played this game with a partner and used a deck of cards to flip over 2 numbers. The challenge was to make the biggest number we could with these 2 cards. We had a lot of fun playing this game.

We have been learning that place value is the value of a digit based on its place in a number. For example, the digit in the tens place on this poster is 5 and the value of the tens place is 50 or 5 tens.

To help us learn about place value we did activities such as draw the number onto the tens frame, bundle your number using icy pole sticks and teen number hunt where we represented out numbers in different ways.

PASSIONS / CURIOSITY

This year in Passions, we have been using the Launch Cycle.  In the Launch Cycle there are phases.

This term we are looking at the first two phases. They are …

  1. Look Listen and Learn
  2. Ask Tons of Questions

This year we are doing Yarning Circle. All the classes have a decorated team stick.  In Yarning Circle, we talk about important topics.  We need to remember to Manage Impulsivity and Listen with Understanding and Empathy.  The only person to talk is the person holding the Yarning Stick.

REPRESENT YOURSELF DAY - 01 APRIL

Represent Yourself Day on April 1st where students can dress up in clothes that represent them or are special to them! Such as cultural dress, team colours, superheroes, or just your favourite, cosy clothes.
