Seven Steps to Writing Success

by Nerida Finlayson

Week 10: Step 3 Tightening Tension

Once again this week, students have continued to tighten the tension and build to a crescendo in their writing. Many homerooms have focused on persuasive texts and ordering their arguments to create maximum impact and persuasion, whilst others have continued to create tension and excitement in narrative texts.

This week we take the opportunity to share with you some of the wonderful tension paragraphs or pieces of writing that have been created in Stages 1 to 3. Perhaps read these pieces of text with your children and see if you can identify which senses have been used to tighten the tension.

I see the big lizard.

I hear the leaves rustling.

I smell the air going past me.

I touch the stencils of the leaf.

I taste the air.

I feel anxious and scared because I can hear the lizard’s big feet!

Bang! I just hit a rock and it knocked me off a waterfall. I had just set eyes on a shark opening its jaw wide. I felt my hands tingling with sweat as I fell. I smell the fresh air. I feel my heart start thumping so hard it could explode! I taste little pebbles as they fall in my mouth. I hear water crashing against the rocks below as I fall.

I can see the dog not afraid of the burglars. As the dog comes in the dog flap, I can hear him barking at me. His tail is wagging and he is jumping in the air like me. I was starting to feel worried. I had no idea what was going on. As the dog jumps on me, I smell the fluffy fur and I feel very nervous. I touch the muddy paws .....

I could see and smell the pot roast through the Simpson family’s glass window. It’s the first time that I’m going to ride a bike. Cars rushed past me making a roaring sound. My heart started to pound. Mum pushed the bike. I was doing it! My mouth filled with dry air, suddenly making it hard to breathe. I heard my parents cheering for me. I squeezed the brakes to stop. It wouldn’t stop! I tried again. Still it wouldn’t stop. I freely steered the grip until I came to a stop. I did it! I finally did it! I rode a bike!

Jenovah Joseph 3/4S

It’s freezing! I am seriously going to die! I can hear the polar bears starting to get hungry. The other explorers have lost faith and are now eating the last of our food. As they all get back up, I can smell their bad breath. After another hour of walking I finally give in and collapse. I can taste the snow as it hits my face. I feel sick - I feel scared.
