Watsonia Campus Welcome BBQ

On Friday the 17th of February we had our annual welcome barbeque at the Watsonia Campus. This event is always a wonderful evening with great opportunities for parents to meet with each other in a relaxed social environment. Families, students and staff mingled throughout the evening experiencing the jumping castle, face painting, hair spray and even tattoos. I was very fortunate and was able to meet many parents for the first time. I look forward to the continued encounters as your children progress through the school.

It would be remiss of me not to thank Kath Moore and her dedicated staff for the amazing job they did readying for the day and then throughout the night. The evening would not have been as successful without their efforts.

Parent Volunteer Information

Just a quick reminder that the Parent Volunteer Information sessions will be held at the beginning stages of term 2. Last year we tripled the number of volunteers working in the school and we would love to continue the growth in relationship from home to school. I hope to see you in April for a formal induction.

School Council Elections

As you may well know Concord School recently had a call for nominations for the 2017 School Council. We would like to welcome Paul Guest as a new member. Paul brings a vast level of experience to the council and we look forward to his input in the governance of the school. We also had a vacancy for our community members. As a council we have invited Jo Huybers to fill that vacancy. Jo has been a parent at Concord School for many years and she is very keen to share her wisdom and experience with the council. I look forward to working with our new council and school community in general throughout the year.

Teaching and Learning

This semester the integrated unit focus at Concord School has been identity. Students throughout the school are working on different skills that relate to the concept. Students from our Lower Primary Campus are working on themes around their community and the community helpers that support us all. Upper Primary students are learning how to make their immediate environment more sustainable. Activities around the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle process will be taught throughout the semester. The students in Secondary 7-8 are learning all about the human body. Understanding how our body works gives our students an insight into their personal identity and how they fit into the whole scheme of things. Our Secondary 9-10 students are learning all about Australia as a nation. Developing an understanding of how we got here and the makeup of our nation really allows our students some connection to their country, school and wider community.

I have already managed to witness a few exciting learning activities. The dissection of a lambs brain was probably not my favourite but the many smiling and excited looks I saw on student faces certainly indicated that it was a crowd favourite. Some of the discussions around our government have been intriguing to say the least. I personally cannot wait to see what other wonderful learnings take place throughout the rest of the semester.

I sign off astounded that we are already nearly halfway through the term and thank the staff, students and community for an excellent start to our year.
