METAMORPHOSIS - CLASS 9

Class 9 Steiner have started the year with their Geomorphology Main Lesson. This main lesson is about change, analysis of the world, movement and where our earth may be 100 years from now.  Last week class 9 headed off on an excursion exploring the geology of the Merri Creek and Yarra River and included some hike practice, walking from Northcote to school. Sketches of key sights enabled students to engage with their natural environment while also learning key science concepts.

Many of these themes and ideas from this Main Lesson are a perfect start for the Class 9 students to explore and consider. The year will be filled with many of the same themes including the hike program, RIJI program, gardening, China Trip and other main lessons.

OUR SISTER SCHOOL'S VISIT AND THE CHINESE CULTURAL DAY

During Week 3, 11-15 February, our sister school, The High School Affiliated to Shanghai Theatre Academy visited our college. Eighteen students and four teachers attended our school. They had English classes in the mornings and participated in our Year 7-10 afternoon classes with their buddies at our college. They also spent 5 nights with our homestays. We are very grateful for all the hosting families who looked after our visitors so well, especially for sending them to our school for catching the early flight at 5:30 am last Saturday. Special thanks also go to our leadership, especially, Sam and Liria, all the teachers, particularly the Year 9 and 10 classroom teachers and our IT technicians, Tim and Anthony, as well as Olga who spent her own time to take the group to the Victoria Market on the last day of the visit.

On Thursday, 14 February, we celebrated our Chinese Cultural Day in the Chinese New Year time (the Year of Golden Pig). In the morning, the Chinese classes were involved in the varied Chinese cultural activities. In the afternoon, we held the Chinese Concert at College theatre. Students from both schools were involved in the performance. Many of our Primary and Year 7 students were on the stage to show their Chinese New Year singing. These were due to all our LOTE teachers efforts and enthusiasm, and as well as the support from our classroom teachers. We also invited some guest performers from the North Eastern Melbourne Chinese Association to do Chinese traditional dance. Their average age was above 55 years old. They not only showed us their beautiful dancing, but also did the interactive fan dancing with our students on the stage. What a wonderful celebration together! Thank you very much for all the support!

House Sport Carnivals

Collingwood College will be holding two House Sport Carnivals during Semester 1. Our Swimming Carnival will take place at Fitzroy Pool on Tuesday, 12th March and our Athletics Carnival on Tuesday, 28th May at the Collingwood Harriers Athletics Track. Different sports are offered in each term and successful teams advance to Region Finals. There is an associated cost for participating in the Inter-School Sports Program - $10 per student. This helps contribute to the upkeep of Team Uniforms, Equipment and Transport. Payment and Permission is given through the Compass Portal and must be completed prior to the event in order for students to attend. Students can participate in one sport per term. Sports for Term 1 are as follows:- Tennis and Volleyball.
