Athletic Sports

Bringing the day out of the cold and wet Term 3 into the bright sunny Term 1 when Year 12’s have a couple of less worries, enabled colour and great participation to be the order of the day at this year’s House Athletics. We reverted back to a House Competition (the first since 2012) and the students and staff really jumped on board in dressing up in their House colours. It was also made it compulsory for the whole school and congratulations to the VCE students who participated and made it a great school memory for them.

Under a bright blue sky and warm conditions students participated like never before. Either in the athletics competition or the additional activities run by the student leadership team. One of the best sights was glancing over toward the grand stand and seeing dozens of students participating in a skipping competition, hoola hoop or wheat bix eating challenge. Many students helped the staff run events, measuring at discus or re setting hurdles that had been knocked down all where a great help and always did it with a smile on their face.

Highlights on the track were when a student tripped on a hurdle and another competitor from the same race stopped to pick her up, made sure she was ok and then both completed the race, or the encouragement groups had for mates to get them involved, even making up another relay team just so that one person who really wanted to run got to run, awesome!

The last event on the day was an 800 meter memorial walk in honour of Mr (Mick) Holloway. Every staff member and student joined together and covered the 2 laps and then gave 3 hearty cheers for Mr Holloway, a leader in School Sport and participation for many years at Fairhills and within the School Sport organisation. A great way to finish a satisfying day.

For those who decided not to attend, I hope you realise that you missed a great day and join in for next year’s House Athletics Day and create your own great memories of school and mates.

Knox District Swimming

The day began with all competitors and staff standing around the pool to honour Mick Holloway with a minute silence and an understanding of what he meant to District Sport.

Our three brave competitors made a big splash in a number of events.

Jayne Brown came third in the 14 yr Butterfly event and eighth in the Freestyle.

Isabel Bayles came sixth in the 13 yr Breaststroke and Backstroke and seventh in the Freestyle event.

Mitchell Tucker was coming third in the 200m Freestyle event when a shoulder injury forced him out of the competition.

Well done to all three on representing Fairhills at District level by finishing sixth our of eight schools.

Intermediate Interschool Sport

Wednesday 9th March was the turn of our Intermediate sports men & women to represent the school at Cricket, Tennis & Volleyball.

Tennis - we had a win with the Intermediate girls taking out the flag & winning through to the Regional Final early next term.  The second girls team battled hard after losing a player to illness and the boys found the competition a little hot for them but both still managed wins.

Cricket - The boys performed well against Rowville East but some good bowling and spectacular catching saw them defeat Fairhills by 40 runs.  We then played Rowville West and picked up wickets regularly whilst restricting their runs.  When it was our turn to bat a very good partnership between Mitch Barrington and Josh Trevethan saw us get the necessary runs with only 1 wicket down.  Nathan Hart batted and bowled well, and Lachie Carroll took some good catches in the field.  Well done boys on finishing equal second.

Volleyball - Our girls team won 2 and lost 1 while the boys won 1 and lost 2.  Upwey and Rowville East were a little strong but the teams enjoyed the day.  Thanks to Mr Beovich who looked after the group and took some great shots.
