ENGLISH in Term Two

Writing:

Over the last two weeks the students have been exploring how to write a persuasive text. As we had NAPLAN approaching, the students have been learning how to bump up their writing to make it sound and read better. The students have learned to plan and create a persuasive piece of text, making sure to include high modality words and interesting sentence starters in order to persuade the reader. The students were also provided with a persuasive topic and practiced writing a piece under NAPLAN conditions. We have also practiced writing Narrative pieces under NAPLAN conditions as well. As teachers, we are very proud of all of the students and how their writing has improved over the last term.

Reading:

The students have been very busy reading and learning about the text Charlotte’s Web. The students are learning how to monitor and self-correct when they find a word they are unsure about throughout a text. Whilst reading Charlotte’s Web, the students are asked to think about the words being read and how they can use strategies to work them out. The students are then asked to use these strategies when they are independently reading. The students are learning to become better readers and are really enjoying reading Charlotte’s Web.  Students have also been reading books related to our Inquiry topic to increase their understanding of First Australians and The First Fleet.

MultiLit Spelling:

It has been amazing to see how many students are picking up on the new sounds and spelling rules that we have been learning throughout the new MultiLit program. Recently the students have been learning about opened and closed syllables. We are now undertaking reviews of lessons that have been previously completed. It has been fantastic to see how far the students have come in comparison to the beginning of the year.

REMINDER:

'The History Box - Ballarat' is coming to Upwey South Primary School to present two interactive shows/workshops. The shows are titled, 'First Australians' and 'First Fleet'. This will take place at school on Monday 24th May. Information regarding permission and payment is now on Compass.

CONGRATULATIONS to all of our Year Three students that worked so hard during our recent NAPLAN assessments. You showed resilience and perseverance to complete these tasks to the best of your ability.

CROSS COUNTRY

Our Year Three and Four students recently completed their two kilometre cross country event. Congratulations on your participation in this event. Well done to those that finished in the top eight in their gender and age group. These students have been invited to attend the next level of cross country.  A super effort to the below students who finished in the top three for their age and gender.

Year Three and Four Assembly

This week we attended assembly in the gym with special guests 'The Combettes'!  We were extremely impressed with the respect our students displayed during the assembly. Congratulations to the wonderful Combette's for their wonderful performance. Our students really enjoyed singing along and joining in!
