Year 7 table tennis team progress to State Finals
Congratulations to the following students who all competed in the State Athletics Competition at Lakeside Athletics Stadium Albert Park on Monday 22 October: Douglas Buckeridge, Sam Dite, Nicholas D’Orazio, Andrew Italia, Koh Nakajima, Archie Noakes, Kai Shookry, Javier Tabit, Niamh Tabit, Amira Tabit, Grace Young and Mikaila Young.
Qualifying to compete at this level is an achievement in itself. All of our Athletes train hard outside of school, this showed with their success on the track and field with many achieving PB’s. Douglas Buckeridge had an exciting finish giving his all to come in second in the 1500m. Niamh Tabit looked very comfortable as she kicked into top gear pulling away from all of her competitors to come in first in the 1500m – 4 seconds ahead of the 2nd placegetter. Mikaila Young came 3rd in both her 800m and 1500m events.
All of our athletes and their families should be proud, the students always conduct themselves in such a professional manner, and constantly show great sportsmanship. Many of our team members are competing in the All School Championship over the long weekend. We wish them well.
Both of our teams played some great Cricket in a Super 8 format. Our Year 7 Girls had a win, a draw and a narrow loss to Melbourne Girls. Considering the team was inexperienced although well led by State Cricketer Minnie O’Sullivan they did well. I can see them doing well in Year 8 next year. Our Year 8 team convincingly won all of their matches and now progress to Northern finals on the 1st of November.
In our Division 6 schools competed. Northcote had 19 girls playing in 3 teams. We dominated the day having all of our teams playing off in the semi-finals. Our teams finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd. They played some great soccer and we will now have trials to select our best team. This team will progress to the Northern Metropolitan finals.
On Wednesday 24th October four Year 8s - Jack Foenander, Matt Santoro, Yianni Syrbopoulos and Hugo Waples - took part in the northern region final for the chance to go the state final. Seven teams competed split into two pools. Northcote easily won its pool, beating both University High and St Helena 4 to 0. Against both schools the doubles were not played as the team won all their singles matches.
Northcote then met Sirius College who had won their pool of four teams. Unfortunately they were too strong four us, winning all four singles matches.
But that is not the end of the story…
On Thursday 25th October six Year 7s also travelled to Coburg for the northern region finals. The six players were Lewis Bush, Antonio Fernandes Carvalho Vecoso, Connor Hastings, Sascha Pereira, David Sandberg and James Wickett.
Again there were seven teams competing split into two pools. We once again easily won our pool, again beating University High (5 to 1) and St Helena (6 to 0). Guess who won the other pool… Sirius College!
It was very close in the final – each school won two of the singles so it was down to the doubles. Northcote went into the doubles round with the advantage of having won nine games compared to Sirius with eight. Northcote then won the first doubles 3 to 0 giving us victory. Sirius won the other doubles 3 to 1. So Northcote overall won thirteen games compared to Sirius with eleven.
Congratulations to all the players and especially the Year 7s who now progress to the state finals at Albert Park later this term.

Our Year 7 & 8 Girls Hockey team competed in the Regional Finals on October 29 at Greensborough Hockey Club. Our team was led by our student coach Taysen Wilcox. In our first match, Melbourne Girls College came out strong and caught our girls off guard scoring early. Our girls stepped up the tempo and throughout the game they made MGC work hard but just weren’t able to get the goals on the board. MGC defeated NHS 3-0. In the 2nd and 3rd matches our girls started to find their groove and began to work well together, winning their following 2 matches against Mernda Central and Aitken Secondary College. The two wins, meant our school came second overall. Well done girls and a big Thanks you Taysen for coaching the side.
The following day it was our Yr 7 Boys team who also travelled to Greensborough to compete in the Regional Hockey Finals. We had a loss in our first match against Aitken, in all other matches we had wins against Princes Hill, Montmorency, and Hazel Glen. Overall our boys came second. A big thank you to Martin Cashmere (Joon’s dad) for all of his time and expertise, coaching the boys at training sessions after school and also coaching on the day.
Well done to our Yr 7 Girls and our Yr 8 Boys and Girls Volleyball teams who competed in the Regional Competition in Week 4. All teams played some very competitive matches and showed great teamwork throughout the competitions.
