Science News

Well, the super seven science staff have been at it again, providing excellent experiences for our students and showing their expertise with their subject and their teaching practice.

The Year 12 Biology class had first hand interaction with Dr John Lancashire, who shared his expertise on infectious diseases.  Thanks go to Ms Depoali for organising such a wonderful opportunity for her students.

After Mr Marshall’s generosity with bringing in his own telescope to show his students the sun and the solar flares, he shared his expertise on the ABC Riverina radio on Tuesday when he was available to answer questions.

Last week the Moon was a brilliant pink ball, in the night sky and a spectacle to behold.  But better is still to come on May 26th

total lunar eclipse is sometimes called a Blood Moon, because of the reddish tinge the Full Moon takes on when fully eclipsed. So what a wonderful time for the Year 7 to be studying the Moon.

Today we celebrated Founders Day. Our thanks go continuously to the wonderful Mercy sisters and Marist brothers that contributed so much to the community, but didn’t have the resources that we have today. I can remember learning science with no laboratory and an occasional demonstration, but we learnt.

I have very fond memories of Sister Joan and Sister Rita who organised a weekend geology excursion to Yass for the class of advance science, of all but 2 girls, in 1967.  They drove us around in a little grey mini minor and scaled the barbed wire fences in full nun dress to give us the best experiences, and they did.

Our College has a long history of great education for those who want to learn.

On that note, keep your eyes on the moon and marvel at the wonderful natural world and the great people who share our lives.

Biology with Ms De Paoli

Year 12 Biology recently attended a zoom meeting with Dr John Lancashire, a specialist General Practitioner who has worked as a senior emergency medicine generalist at Griffith Base Hospital. He shared his expertise on infectious disease, antibiotics and vaccines which coincided with the current Depth Study the students are conducting. Students will apply the information presented to design an experiment to test the effectiveness of natural antibiotics on bacteria and include research on the increase of antibiotic resistance.

Biology with Ms Davis

Ms Davis'  Year 11 Biology class studied the differences between leaves of xerophytes and aquatic plants as well as other animal structures. These images were taken using the microscope attachment. Students were able to observe adaptations that have been caused by selection pressures.
