Year 1/2 News

Welcome

Over the past fortnight, students in Year 1/2 have continued to work collaboratively with one another through structured activities, during Investigations and through outdoor games. Students have continued to practice the importance of listening to the ideas of others and how ‘teamwork makes the dream work!’

As a continuation of our celebration and love for books, we have explored different types of fiction books including mysteries, adventure and animal stories. Utilising their knowledge of sentence structure, students recreated imaginative texts and reread their own pieces to check for meaning.

Over the past few weeks, students have continued to explore telling the time. They focused on sequencing events that may happen throughout their school day and practiced the days of the week, months of the year and the seasons. Students created their own clocks to support their understanding of the hour hand and minute hand and demonstrated the clockwise turning direction of the hands. Students have continued to practice telling the time to the hour, half hour and quarter hour.

To continue to support your child at home in telling the time, practise reading the clock by using the hour hand to support their understanding. You might ask your child the time when they wake up, after getting dressed or as you are leaving for school.

Over the past fortnight, students have participated in a Homeroom Mass with Father Simon and Deacon James. Students explored the importance of our archangel, St. Raphael and have explored important symbols related to our patron.

As part of NAIDOC Week, students investigated and recognised our nation’s First People who have occupied our land for over 65,000 years. Students explored Indigenous artwork and symbols to support their ability to tell stories.

In preparation for Remembrance Day, students have begun to reflect and acknowledge those who have served and who continue to serve our country. They used inspiration from our own school garden’s poppies to create their own poppy field during Investigations.
