Did you know the teachers at St. Raph's are quite talented artists?! Last Friday afternoon, I arranged a clay workshop for the staff at our school. The idea behind the activity was to look back on the year we've just had, then choose some aboriginal symbols to represent the journey we each went on. We sculpted our stories into a clay tile. When the clay is dry we will fire and glaze them, then put them in the Indigenous Garden.
The year 5/6's totem pole boxes are well under way! The students have painted their boxes, and are now adding their animal's features using cardboard, paper and foam. All three classes are working very hard to make their boxes neat and interesting. We have one more lesson this week, and (hopefully) all the boxes will be ready to display in the school after NAIDOC Week this week. I am entering this work from all the 5/6 students into Catholic Education Melbourne's big art show next year called Creative Arts Exhibition - wish us luck!
The YEAR 3/4's have spent the last two weeks sculpting their clay dogs. Now the dogs need to dry out entirely before going off to be fired. If there is even a tiny bit of moisture inside the clay, it can explode in the kiln as the water turns to steam and expands. Did you know the kiln temperature reaches 1000C?!
This week the Year 1/2 students are printing using the print block they created in our last lesson. Their task is to print on either red or yellow paper, and also on glitter scratch paper. Next week we will scratch away lines in the paper to reveal glittering x-ray bones!
In Foundation last week, the students used cardboard shapes to take a rubbing of their favourite animal. This week, they will make another rubbing using oil pastels and combine it with their paintings from a few weeks ago. Their artworks are nearly finished!
