Class of the week: 3/4N

Year 4 Camp

On May 29th, the Year 4 students went to Sovereign Hill camp. Excitement filled the hall as the students gradually entered. Teachers were frantically ticking names and organising anything else that needed to be completed. Eventually the commotion subsided as Mr Mullaly welcomed all the parents and students. Finally, it was time to go! We began carrying our heavy luggage out to the buses. The excitement from earlier disappeared as parents and students came to the realisation that they would be apart for a few days. Everyone said their final goodbyes. The doors of the buses closed shut and off we went.

Here are a couple of recounts that the Year 4 students wrote.

Year 4 Camp to Sovereign Hill By Arielle Bordingnon

On the 29th of May the Year 4’s went on camp. When we got to school, we went to the hall. We said our goodbyes and got onto the bus.

It took nearly 3 hours to get there. When we got there, it was raining. We had to carry all of our heavy bags from the bus down all of the steps and into our cabins. We had some relaxing time before our activities started.

It was only raining lightly now, but we still had to put all of our jackets and scarves on. It was so fun doing all of the activities. We went to the mines, gold panning and much more. That was just the first day!

Anyway, it was night already. Some of us couldn’t sleep for a while. Eventually we all fell asleep. The next day the teachers came to knock on our door and we all woke up. We went to have breakfast at a cafe and then had some time in our cabins to brush our teeth and chill out. Then our activities started.

A few hours later, it was time for lunch. Lunch was amazing! We had baked potatoes and we got to choose our toppings.

Afterwards, we went gold panning and did all of our other activities. When it was night, we went to this amazing light show. It looked really cool. We got back super late. We changed into our pyjamas, brushed our teeth and fell asleep straight away.

In the morning none of us wanted to get out of bed, but we knew we had to. It was the day we were leaving so we had to get up. We were leaving at 12:30 so we had to pack our bags.

When we finished our activities, we had to go straight back to our cabins. We had to go to our buses. There was Bus A and Bus B. We carried our luggage to the bus and then got on. We got to pick our partners. It felt like the bus ride back to school was a lot shorter.

When we got back to school, we could go home if our parents were there. Luckily mine were there so we signed out and went home!

Camp 2019 By Alexia Kotsiras

Yay! Finally this day had come. I was so excited and happy but also feeling a tiny bit nervous to leave my family. As I say my final goodbyes, we are off.

The bus ride was so long. We finally stopped and had a break and ate our snack. We were back on the road and not too far away. After a bit of time, I saw sign saying Sovereign Hill. We are here!

As we started to take our bags out it started raining. All of my stuff got wet but then we went undercover to wait. A bit of time went by before we went to the shared room to have lunch.

Then we went to our activities with Ms Ann Maree and Mrs Mclean. We went underground. It was epic!

Finally we went back to our cabins and chilled, then had dinner. That night we went to the Sovereign Hill Theatre. The first show we saw was magic and the magician guessed my name. I have no idea how he guessed it. It was so awesome! Then it was time for supper. We had milo and cookies which were yummy. I loved them.

Then we headed back to our cabins and got ready for bed. I read my new book as I started to doze off. I fell asleep with the book in my hand.

Eight hours later, it was 6:05am. I could hear Mr Nguyen knocking on our door saying 'get up!' I felt so tired and excited for the day. We got ready and saw snow. I was amazed.

We headed to breakfast. Once we got there, we sat at a table. We started to get our breakfast which was toast, cereal and a juice box. After, we got free time in our cabins.

Next we got ready for our activities, which was gold panning with Ms Ann Maree and Mrs Mclean. I found a few specks of gold! Finally we went back to our cabins and got a bit of time to play.

Next it was dinner. We had fish and chips and it was so good. After we ate, we went to the Aura Light Show. The people explained that there were three parts. Part one was 3D. We got to wear 3D glasses. It was epic because the gold looked like it was flying at me. It was also a bit scary because of the explosions. The second part was a video that was projected onto the lake. Finally, the third part was inside. The screen opened up which became an outside area. There were explosions and fire.

We then went back on the bus which drove to our cabins. Then we had supper, which was a cookie. Next we got ready for bed.

I was sad that it was the final day but at least we had one more activity as a whole group. Then we got into out shopping groups and shopped until we spend our money. We only had 30 minutes. I bought some lollies and a candle.

Then it was time to go. We all got on the bus and got ticked off the roll. The bus drive back was so fun because the bus driver played music. Good music. We were finally back. Yay!

Reading - The Day the Crayons Quit

The Day the Crayons Quit has been one of 3/4N’s favourite books to explore this term!

Duncan arrives at school one day, excited to colour with his colourful crayons. Poor Duncan finds a stack of letters on his desk. He opens and reads each letter one at a time. He quickly comes to the horrifying realisation that his crayons are fed up with the way they’ve been treated and quit! Black wants to be used for more than just outlining. Blue needs a break from colouring the vast oceans and skies. And Orange and Yellow are no longer speaking as each believes he is the true colour of the sun. To solve the problem, Duncan illustrates a very unique and creative work of art.

Students then completed a couple of activities relating to the picture book. First, they needed to create their own illustration using the 12 colours featured in the story. They were encouraged to be creative, just like Duncan. Secondly, students received a template of a crayon. They mixed at least two colours of pastels to produce their own unique colour and create an appropriate name. Here are some samples.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students have been learning to identify and name 2D shapes and angles: acute, right and obtuse. As part of our learning, we created a watercolour artwork. We stuck long strips of masking tape on an A4 piece of paper, creating different shapes. Next, we coloured the shapes using two or three coloured textas. Afterwards, we sprayed the artwork with paint and used a paintbrush to blend and mix the colours together. Once it had dried, we carefully peeled masking tape off, leaving behind coloured shapes. Students then needed to name each shape by analysing the different types of lines, angles and number of sides.
