#ISQua2019 Conference

Closing Plenary Speaker Confirmed!

We are delighted to confirm Zanele Vayeke, the first black female helicopter commander in the South African National Defence Force, as our closing plenary speaker for #ISQua2019!

Pretoria-born Vayeke joined the air force in 2004, qualified as a pilot in 2007 and became a co-pilot in 2008. She became commander in 2014.

The 34-year-old is married and a mother of three children.

She is employed by the South African Airforce as a Major and is currently the Operations Officer of squadron 17 at the Airforce base in Swartkop and is the first black female to command the Agusta A109 helicopter and then moved on to the Oryx helicopter.

She has been deployed to Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

She was part of President Cyril Ramaphosa's inauguration on May 25, where she planned and organised the helicopters, aircrew and ground crew from all over the country.

Zanele will share her journey to excelling in what was previously a predominately male-dominated field and the highlights of her career to date.

Zanele will be speaking on Wednesday, 23rd October 2019 at 15:15 in Auditorium 1 of the Cape Town Convention Centre.

Post Conference Education Site Visits

Each year, ISQua organises a selection of on-site visits in medical facilities and organisations, for delegates to attend post-conference.

These visits are always very well received and fill up extremely fast - already, two of our four visits are sold out! Tickets are €15 for non-members, and free for ISQua members. Tickets are available through the registration portal - https://www.isqua.org/events/ct2019.html/#registration-fees

We have two excellent visits remaining:

Living Hope Health Care Centre

Visit our Living Hope main campus in Capri and see our 22-bed hospice, our farm where we teach students how to become commercial farmers, learn about our out-patient substance abuse recovery programme for adults in Muizenberg; and our children’s programme in Capri, visit one of our neighbouring townships, Masiphumelele where we offer integrated home and community-based health services, first 1000 days support groups and life skills programmes to children and parenting classes to their parents.

University of Cape Town - SHAWCO

The Student Health and Welfare Centres Organisation, SHAWCO was founded in 1943 by a University of Cape Town medical student. The organisation was born out of the need to provide quality health care in underserviced areas in Cape Town, South Africa. Since then the organisation has grown to provide educational services in addition to Health services. SHAWCO is student-run and student-led with SHAWCO Health running up to seven mobile-clinics a week.

Clinics are run by students under the supervision of qualified health professionals and provide a mutualistic environment where both student development and community upliftment are prioritised. Patients are given access to holistic primary health including rehabilitative therapy and limited medication which are all free to the patient.

Join us for a presentation on the SHAWCO model, what makes it unique and why we believe it remains relevant today. This will take the form of an interactive seminar with a Q&A session at the end.
