GPs in Schools Pilot

The GPs in Schools Pilot will place General Practitioners (GPs) in 50 Queensland state schools with secondary students.

The service will provide students with free access to a GP at school 1 day per week, removing barriers students may otherwise face to receiving timely and appropriate healthcare.

The provision of this service will have positive impacts for students' health and wellbeing and their readiness and ability to engage positively at school.

All Queensland state schools with secondary students were invited to apply to participate in the pilot by responding to an expression of interest, outlining the level of need in their school and how providing access to a GP at school would benefit their students' health and wellbeing.

Following a great deal of interest from schools, a decision was made to expand the pilot from supporting 20 to 50 schools to provide a GP service to their secondary students.

Schools selected to participate in the pilot have now been announced.

The closest school based GP is at North Rockhampton State High School.

QParents is coming

Great news: RNSS will soon be providing our parent community with the opportunity to register for QParents.

The QParents web and mobile application provides a more convenient, easier way for parents and legal guardians of Queensland state school students to interact with their child’s school. Parents will have secure, online access to their child’s student information, anytime, anywhere, through a smartphone, tablet or computer.

QParents allows parents to connect instantly with their child’s school to access and manage their child’s student information, including:

• Attendance and absence details, as well as the ability to notify the school of an absence

• Behaviour information

• Academic report cards

• Class timetables

• Downloading exam timetables and assessment planners

• Viewing unpaid invoice details, payment history, and making payments online

• Viewing and updating personal student details, including medical conditions and address

• Enrolment details

• Upcoming events list showing school events, exam and assessment dates, and excursions.

QParents will assist both staff and parents in sharing and responding to information in an efficient and effective way.

We will be sending out invitations for parents to register for QParents in Term 3. If you do not want to register, you may advise us not to send you any more invitations, and your child’s student information will not be available to anyone through QParents.

QParents won’t replace the traditional ways you communicate with our school, but it will provide another way to communicate with us.

More information about QParents can be found at https://qparents.qld.edu.au/#/about

Queensland Premier's Reading Challenge

In 2021, Rockhampton North Special School, along with 925 schools and 357 centres took part in the Premier’s Reading Challenge, more than 168,000 Queensland children and students read over 2.39 million books.

The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is an annual state-wide initiative for Queensland state and non-state schools and home-educated students from Prep to Year 9, as well as children (aged up to 5 years) enrolled in an early childhood centre.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure and learning.

Rockhampton North Special School is again a part of the 2022 Reading Challenge. Students are encouraged to read books at home and at school and these can be added to the books read each week during Literacy lessons.  Books that are read by parents, siblings and carers to students, can be counted in the total number of books read.

The Premier’s reading Challenge has started and all students will have a book reading list sent home so that the books read at home can be added to the student’s books read list. The books read list will be sent via Seesaw. Teachers will add the books read during class to the students list. The Premier’s Reading Challenge ends on 20 August 2022. The total number of books read by each student will be uploaded to the Premiers Reading Challenge website by the co-ordinator, Akaysha Hollande. Certificates will be awarded later in the year to all students who participate.
