From Our School Leaders

As we draw to the end of Term 2, it almost marks the halfway point in the school year. We have achieved a lot this semester and it’s great to be back doing the extra things that make school fun and engaging. Here is a list of some of our achievements this semester:

  • Whole school concert - "Sing and Play!"
  • NAPLAN testing and audit completed
  • Open mornings and nights - lovely to have our community back on-site
  • Curriculum and Professional Practice days
  • Sporting events - Cross Country, Athletics Day, Swimming program
  • Chinese Cultural Day
  • PFA - Mothers Day stall and raffle, Pie Drive

Next term we are having our second shade sail installed.  This will be put behind the Foundation building, opening that area up to become a more usable outdoor learning space. We are also working towards installing a new playground near the rear entrance of the school.  Funds for this project have come from PFA fundraising over the last two years.

Attendance

We have had quite a few children and families working hard to improve school attendance this term. Well done to those of you who are making a concerted effort. We are now monitoring arrival and dismissal times. We have a few children with consistent habits of late arrival and early pick up; of course, some of these are regular appointments with service providers (speech therapist, OT, etc.), which are agreed upon.

Keep up the great work, and if late arrival is a problem for your family, a goal of arriving at school on time might be something that can be set for yourselves next term.

Parking During Pick-up Times

One of the school's neighbours contacted the school recently, quite concerned about damage to their nature strip. Someone in a four-wheel drive is parking on the nature strip at school pick-up time and this has made large ruts in the ground; the condition has been exacerbated by the wet weather.  The nature strip now needs repair. Please be respectful of the school’s neighbours and their property during pick-up times.

Parent Use Of Staff Car Park

We would also like to remind parents that they are NOT to park in the staff car park between 8.30-9.15am or 3.15-3.45pm.  We have witnessed some near misses recently, with children running through the car park, and near collisions between parent cars.  To avoid a potential accident, we ask parents to please observe this request.

The only exception to this are holders of an Accessibility Parking Permit, with a car clearly displaying the permit, who may park in the marked accessibly parking bays in the staff car park.

150th Celebration Planning

The Scoresby PS 150th Celebration Planning Committee has been meeting throughout Terms 1 and 2 this year, to plan events to celebrate the milestone for Scoresby PS. We have planned a week of events at school, which will culminate in an afternoon of celebration where the history of the school will be showcased. We will make a new time capsule to bury in the garden and welcome past staff and students back to Scoresby PS. The date for this special event is Saturday 19th November, 1.00 - 4.30pm.

To mark the special occasion, our school's side entrance (Orson St entrance) will have a makeover. The 150th commemorative entrance will have the path upgraded, easier access created (the step will be removed), a new garden installed and a commemorative path and plaque to mark the 150th milestone.

Families of SPS students - present and past - will have the opportunity to design a brick that will be laid around the perimeter of the path. More details will be out early Term 3.  We will be looking at designing something similar to the example from Aquinas College (image below) to go in the middle of the path to commemorate the special 150th milestone. The bricks will be placed around the edge of the new pathway.

Parent Help In Term 3

We are always seeking the help of parents to work with us in many ways. The guidelines state that all parents who are helping in any way in schools must be triple vaccinated and have a valid, up-to-date Working with Children Check. This also serves as an emergency management system; in the case of an event, we know how many people we are accounting for and who is on-site.

We would love to have parents working with us in the following areas:

  • Classroom help in all levels F- 6 (listening to students read / playing maths games / small-group literacy work
  • Art Room help
  • Breakfast Club help (Wednesday mornings)
  • Gardening Program help (Friday mornings & lunchtimes)
  • Join PFA

If you can spare an hour each week, or fortnight, we would welcome your assistance. Please see your child’s class teacher, Nicole or Sue if you would like to come and work with us.

Enrolments 2023

Early planning for 2023 starts next term. We are accepting enrolments for Foundation 2023 now. If you, or anyone you know, is intending to enrol their child at Scoresby PS, please do so soon.

Enrolment forms can be found on our website or can be collected from the school office.

Tours of our wonderful school during school hours are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays; bookings can be made via our website. After-hour tours can also be arranged directly with Nicole or Sue.

School Holiday Safety

If you are in the area and see any damage or inappropriate behaviours at the school during the school holidays, please contact the police on 131 444.

Wishing everyone a restful holiday break. Stay warm and well, and we will see you back at school on Monday 11th July for the start of Term 3.
