Year 7 Camp
By Felicia Lee
In one word, it was a blast. Though our days at camp were completely packed and stacked with activities, the seventh-grade student body clearly had an amazing time out there in the bush and within Narmbool. Key partitions of the action-filled experience included a tranquil twelve-kilometre walk, collaborative games, starry night walks and an exciting visit to Sovereign Hill in which we conducted many interactions. I think the primary aspect of camp was getting to know other students and teachers more, outside of school, out by the countryside – our unfamiliarity.
Narmbool Camp is a former sheep farm of about two-thousand hectares. Expanding on our adventure in the camp, it was momentarily a bit intimidating until we took in the picturesque landscape and views beyond. Since the camp is located on land that was moved, there were hills of igneous rocks we climbed up early each day to observe an especially beautiful sunrise, while others – slept in. The weather was rather fine and chilly when the decks became slippery, however it gave a sense of independence from the regular life in the suburbs. All the ventures promoted physical movement and working together with unfamiliar peers which made a difference to a simple school day.
The facilities of Narmbool were great and clean, the cabins provided a cosy environment all night – collectively, each mix of cabin members stimulated a growing, friendly bond with a variety of students. The food and hospitality of the staff was excellent; we were never left on an empty stomach. I would also like to specify, and I speak for all the Year 7s; we are very grateful to our wonderful teachers for taking us, guiding us on this escapade of the year.
In all words spoken, the 2022 Year 7 camp, without a doubt, was an experience that would never be forgotten. From the interests of Aboriginal culture to the toffee-apples bought at Sovereign Hill, we now look forward to a similar, greater chance of embracing nature and the beauty of a completely different destination.
