Grade 5 - 6

Reading
In reading the past two weeks we have been continuing our novel for the term ‘Matilda’ by Roald Dahl. We are quickly approaching the end of the novel and have been discussing the reasons for characters changing and why the author does certain things. It is opening the student’s eyes to all the tips and tricks an author can use to enhance their writing.
Writing
The grade 5/6s have started writing their own biographies. For our first try we have all decided to work together and write biographies on Roald Dahl, the author of our class novel ‘Matilda’. We have broken down all the parts of his life and separated them into some greatly written biographies. We are really looking forward to choosing our own person to research and write our next biographies about.
Maths
In maths we have been focusing on Units of Measurement. We have had students ready, ruler in hand, ready to explore all the different elements of measurement. Grade 5/6s have been seen around the school, measuring basketball courts, ovals, the length of a kilometer. Our trundle wheels have had their work cut out for them with the distance they’ve racked up in the past week. Students have also explored the concept of a square metre and what a hectare is.
AFL Gala Day
Two weeks ago, many of our Grade 5/6 boys geared up, mouthguards at the ready to represent our school at the AFL Gala Day. It was the first time Grayling Primary School had been represented at this event. We finished the day with 2 wins and 2 losses finishing 5th out of 8 teams which was a huge success. It was a nail-biting finish to the day with our School Captain taking it upon himself to kick the winning goal with 2 minutes left in the 5th vs 6th game. Students should be proud of themselves for representing the Grayling School values and giving their best efforts in a hard days work.
