Grade 2

A day in the life of a Year 2 student at Grayling Primary School.
We start each morning by marking the role to see who is at school.
Then we begin our student lead morning meeting. Each student takes a turn leading our morning meeting. During our morning meeting we discuss how many days we have been at school, the day, month, season, weather and special event.
After our morning meeting we have a Reading, Writing and Mathematics lesson. Our other two lessons can be a little different depending on our timetable. These lesson could be STEM, Art, Physical Education, Humanities, Spelling, Handwriting, House Sport or Assembly.
Reading
During our reading lesson, the first half of the lesson is spent learning a new concept or skill, as a whole group. Then we practise or consolidate our new skill or concept within real contexts, individually, in pairs or within a small group. During our second reading learning time, students change their reader and participate in the Reader’s Workshop. During the Reader’s Workshop students rotate between reading independently, reading in partners, reading with their teacher and online reading.
Our learning focus for reading this past fortnight has been figurative language used in Poetry.
Writing
Our writing lesson is similar to our reading lesson- it is split into two sections. During the first half of the lesson, we also learn a new concept or skill, as a whole group. Then we practise or consolidate our new skill or concept while writing, individually, in pairs or within a small group. During our second half of our Writing learning time, students use their Writer's Notebook. A Writer’s notebook provides students with the opportunity to write about what they want to write about in the genre they want to write. Writer’s notebooks was hugely successful for developing a joy in writing.
Our learning focus for Writing this past fortnight has been Colour Poems.
As promised in our previous addition, here are some examples of some of the amazing work our poets have produced.
Mathematics
During our mathematics groups we have continued our learning groups. These groups have given us all a chance to work with other students in our learning community we don’t usually work with. Each day students rotate through different activities that cater to their next steps in learning. These activities include MathsOnline, independent learning activity and teacher focus groups. We have had a busy week of learning in our mathematics groups. Some of us were working on following and writing directions and reading maps!
Eating
Between sessions one and two the students are able to get some fruit and eat it whilst they listen to the next lesson. We then have our snack at 10:30 giving the students 15 minutes to eat before they go out to play. For lunch time we pack up at 1:00, again, allowing the students to have 15 minutes to eat before play time.
Homework
Each Year 2 student has individualised homework depending on their personalised learning. This may include a take home reader, spelling words, handwriting sheets or assigned online activities through Wushka, Literacy Planet, Essential Assessment or MathsOnline. Students are encouraged to bring their homework book to school every school day so that teachers can assign their individualised work as required. ***Please note that homework is exclusive to year 2 students and NOT a whole school requirement***
