Reading
In reading, we have continued learning some new diagraphs. The diagraphs that we learnt this week were ‘sh’, ‘th’ and ‘ou’. Students have been participating in rotations where they practice the correct letter formation for our newly learnt diagraphs using materials such as sand, rice and pom poms. Students have also begun practicing how to read independently.
Writing
This week our fun and engaging experience for our recount focus was making our own fairy bread. Students loved this hands-on experience, but most of all loved eating the fairy bread afterwards! After this experience, we discussed ‘who’ was involved in the experience, ‘what’ we did for the experience and ‘where’ the experience took place. Throughout the week, students used this information to create a word splash, title, sentence and picture.
Maths
In maths, we have been focusing on time. Students have been learning about the days of the week and the difference between day and night. We also learnt how to compare the duration of different activities using terminology such as ‘least’, ‘same’ and ‘most’. Students have been practicing how to order steps within an event, for example, by ordering the steps of how we made our fairy bread.
Integrated
This week we have been learning about the power of the word “yet”. Students brainstormed things that they can do and cannot do “yet”. We discussed that with a bit of time and practice, they will eventually be able to do those things. Students have also been learning what it means to have a growth mindset and how it is different to having a fixed mindset. As a class, we brainstormed some growth mindset phrases such as ‘I will keep trying’ and ‘mistakes help me learn’. Students worked in pairs to create growth mindset posters that will be displayed around our learning community.
