IG Netball

Our Yr 9/10 girls travelled to Coburg Stadium for the Moreland Division IG Netball tournament. With seven schools sending teams it was an extremely busy day, with only 10 minutes between games - the girls were kept on their toes.

Each round was highly contested with everyone playing and substituting during each game to take their breath. At the end of the day we finished joint third with Pascoe Vale Girls College but their goal difference meant we missed out on a flag finishing fourth overall.

A big thank you to the whole team, especially our Team Manager Sasha Anthony for organising team training, playing positions, and coaching throughout the day. Our time will come….

Year 8 Boys Soccer

This week we had the year 8 Boys Soccer team venture out to John Fawkner to compete against other schools in Soccer. Although the winter conditions were very well felt it was a very successful day. In the first game against Coburg, it was a tough contest that resulted in a 0-0 draw. The following game against John Fawkner the boys were able to show off some impressive team play and won 4-2. In the last pool game, they came up against a very good team in AIA who were undefeated for the whole day but they boys did not give up and really took it up to them to unfortunately go down 2-1. At the end of their pool matches the boys advanced to a playoff game to get 3rd overall out of 8 teams. This game was highly competitive and looked headed towards penalties however with a minute to go the boys were able to score and won 3-2 which resulted in bringing back a flag to Collingwood. All boys must be congratulated on their efforts for the day and going about it in a fantastic way.

Year 8 Boys Badminton

On Tuesday the 14th of June, 8 of our Year 8 students hosted the Year 8 Boys Badminton Tournament for Sporting Schools Victoria at Collingwood College. Our students showed great respect and teamwork during the day, they were welcoming and friendly to the students from Coburg High School and showed great umpiring and scoring abilities. We took out the day with our A Team winning all 12 matches for the day and our B team coming in second winning 8 out of 12 games. Congratulations team!

Year 8 GTAC Prosthetic Limbs Excursion

GTAC (Gene Technology Access Centre) is located in Parkville right next to University High School. Over the past 3 weeks, we first had a virtual workshop with GTAC where we had to create something that would help us with putting our socks and shoes on. We first tried doing the sock and shoe challenge with our non-dominant hand then we created a tool that could help us. My group made this thing that had extended fingers for pipe cleaners that helped tie the laces but we couldn’t do the knot at the end.

On the 7th of June, we headed to the actual place. We met someone at the front door of the building, and he told us where we would be and what would be happening. We walked up these windy, curly stairs to get to the room we were in. We all got told that we had to put our bags away and then sit down at one of the three tables and write our names on the name tags that were in front of our seats. We were told instructions and what we would be doing that day. We learned about three amputees. We then got given one of the amputees and we had to make a prosthetic limb for them but they had specific activities they did. My partner and I got Zahara. They wanted a prosthetic where they could drum as no one else did.

After discussing the prosthetics with the other people at our table and our mentor, we started building robotic arms. There were many parts and somewhere very confusing. Some parts wouldn’t do what they were meant to do, some didn’t even work. We controlled the whole robotic arm with an app on iPads. We did some challenges with our robotic arms and then the part I didn’t look forward to coming. We had to stick this thing on our arms to control it with our muscles. It was very weird. The robotic arm wouldn’t stop moving even though the thing was off my arm. It was like there was a ghost controlling it or someone else was.

We finished everything up. We thanked everyone for the day and for having us at GTAC. We went to the place where all these University kids normally go to get lunch but everything was closed so we got pizza. After pizza, we walked to the bus stop. It was the wrong bus stop. So we kept on walking for another five-ten minutes until we got to the right bus stop. I knew where we were going because I knew the bus route.

I definitely recommend going to GTAC. It is a time that I will never forget. I had a blast.

I would like to thank Andy and Hannah for giving us the opportunity to visit GTAC.

Year 9 & 10 Happenings

As tired as students may be right now, we encourage all to reflect on the term and on what they have achieved - thinking carefully about successes, challenges and improvements made. Despite covid-related absences, we have still been able to meet learning outcomes, partake in programs and continue to attend curriculum-related events.

Year 9 students have completed their Morrisby assessments and most students have had their interview with a careers consultant.  Additionally, they have attended incursions and excursions - one such being an indigenous STEM incursion (Astronomy Workshop) and another being an organised REACH activity on respectful relationships. Year 9 students have undertaken ‘exams’ for the first time this week having completed an English and Maths exam.

Our recent visit to Wurun for a guided tour was also a highlight for Year 9 students this term!

Year 10 students are also congratulated for their amazing efforts to complete four exams for the core subjects of English, Maths, Science and Humanities/Main Lesson.  We were very impressed with the way that students positively approached this learning opportunity by actively communicating with their teachers, organising a home study routine and following exam protocols! Students have already reflected on the exam process this week during Home Group, and are further encouraged to have conversations with their parents about their exam experiences at home.  These practice exams focussed on developing time management skills and the ability to independently revise content across different subjects.

It was great to see a number of our parents attend the Senior Programs Information Night at Wurun to support their child with gaining a deeper understanding of the different programs and pathways available.

Just a reminder that Year 10 Work Experience is taking place Week 4 and 5 (Aug 1-12) next term, and there is an expectation that all students secure a work experience placement.  The break will be the perfect time for students to continue to contact businesses and organisations if they are still seeking work opportunities. All students have their resume, CV and email/phone communications completed to assist in this area. Well done to the many students who have already done this and are ready to go!

Thank you to Ocea, Zahra, Jemima, Jasmine and Rosie for presenting to the Year 10 cohort about the careers and pathways that they learned about at the Women in Trades Expo.

The following students were recognised for outstanding work in meeting our School Values at the end of term assembly.
