Teaching and Learning

P-3 News from Mrs Lightburn

Greetings from the P-3 class. I can’t believe we have packed so much into the term so far but we are all working hard. Everyone had a great trip down to Quantum in Melbourne last Monday and we learned so much from the teachers there. Our class learned about how to make a hypothesis, conduct an experiment and conclude whether they were accurate or not. No doubt you have seen their Mexican Jumping Beans in their bean hospital.

We learnt what a plant needed to grow and drew and labelled a diagram to show the process. It was a long day but very worthwhile and we are looking forward to going again.

In the classroom we have finished our multiplication unit in Maths and starting Fractions. We are also looking at “Our place in the world” which includes studying Victoria, Australia and our closest neighbours.

Year 4-6 News

Below is a report from Link showing his thoughts on the recent Quantum Science Excursion.

Printed Minecraft

Blinding lights bursting form the PC screens as I click and blend shapes together on Tinkercad. One Monday, I was at Quantum Victoria on a school excursion.

As I walked over to the laptop I pulled open the lid to playground of tools. I started experimenting until I decided on using a Minecraft logo as a base. I then started to detail it with textures and patterns. The teachers kept walking past and complimenting me.

When I finished detailing the logo, I added my user name* and real name. It was cool watching it print.

I can't wait to go again, it was a perfectly printed day!

Students in Year 4-6 have been learning about Money and Finance as part of their Mathematics studies. Last week they performed some coin rubbings, the main foci of the sessions have been bundling, ordering and learning how to count money efficiently.

News from Ms Coffey

Grade 4 Writing

During Wednesday’s Writing sessions with Miss Coffey, the Grade 4’s are currently focussed upon Information Reports. In week 1, we read a text titled  ‘Spectacular Spiders’ to help us better understand some of the key features of Information Reports. We now know they contain an introduction, main body (which is often comprised of 3 or 4 paragraphs which contain more specific information about the chosen topic) and a conclusion. We also looked at the types of language used in Information Reports and the devices we might incorporate to hook the reader. For example, using ‘sizzling starts’ to entice the reader to read on, or using vocabulary specific to the topic. In week 2,  we read about the emu and began to take the key information we learnt and record it down on our group planning sheet. This was so we were better prepared to look at how to use the facts and information we learnt to write an informative and engaging paragraph in our own words. In week 3, we practised writing an introduction for the emu both together as a group, and then individually.

Drama

This term, all students will be involved in Drama sessions on Wednesday afternoons. In weeks 1, 2 and 3, we have been enjoying participating in a variety of drama games such as ‘Move like a …….’, ‘I went to the shops and bought………’, ‘Name 5 things that ……’, ‘Spot the difference’ etc. The aim of these types of games are to help us think on the spot, be comfortable to step outside our comfort zone, work as a team, build our own self-confidence, develop our creativity and, to have fun! You might even like to try some of these fun games and activities at home!
