Governing Council Reports
Early Years 1 - Foundation & Year 1
We have spent time setting up classroom routines and expectations. Students have enjoyed getting to know their teacher/s and other students in their class. Our students have now had the opportunity to go through a full rotation of specialist subjects. They have enjoyed exploring the different subjects and getting to know their specialist teachers. Our curriculum learning has now started and students are eagerly participating in maths, phonics and English lessons.
Early Years 2 - Years 1 & 2
We have started teaching our spelling lessons based on the `Reading Success in Action’ programme. The Department for Education has delivered units for Foundation to Year 2 students in English so we are adopting these as our tools for teaching and becoming familiar with this new teaching tool.
The Year 2’s are focussing on poetry and the Year 1’s on active listening. We are working together to get to know this new resource. We have spent the first few weeks getting to know our students and settling them into new routines and structures. We have had a terrific start to the year.
Primary Years
The Primary Years team have introduced morphology as part of their spelling program. Morphology is the study of words and their parts. We are focusing on prefixes and suffixes using base words. We have begun IBL with Sonia Howard in the Library. Sonia Howard is working on the Department units looking at Digital Technologies. Our Year 3/4 students have the opportunity to register for the Children’s University Program. We have developed a consistent homework program across all classes.
Our students have had the opportunity to participate in the Lacrosse Clinics.
Middle Years PLC
The Middle Years team have spent the first two weeks building strong relationships and foundations around expectations and routines within the classroom. We have introduced morphology which is the study of words and how they make meaning. Middle Years students have participated in a Lacrosse clinic every Friday for weeks 2-4, and the Year 5 and 6 girls have been participating in the South Australian Cricket Association cricket clinics every Monday for weeks 1-4. The students have also begun visual arts focusing on portraiture.
Performing Arts
Foundation, Year 1 and 2 students are learning to use improvisation techniques to develop elements of voice and movement to communicate character traits, emotions and actions. Students are learning to use improvisation in character to retell a fairytale story, for example, Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, Jack and the Beanstalk, Sleeping Beauty and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Students are singing "Try Everything" from Zootopia and performing dances to songs. Students play drama games and improvise dramatic actions in guided drama scenarios.
Students in years 3-6 learn to build characters during improvisation in groups. The students collaborate to create a dramatic action that communicates ideas and meanings in a chosen scene. Students are learning to perform their choice of different drama scenarios in front of the class. Students learn to develop skills of language, voice, movement and gestures to create characters and focus on the dramatic action of their scenarios. Students learn to adopt a character and maintain focus.
Japanese
All classes have had a great start to the year learning about the year of the rabbit and the cultural importance that new year has to the Japanese people. They have learned key words and symbols of the new year celebrations.
