Teaching and Learning

Start of Year Learning Procedures

Thanks to everyone for the support provided to get the year off to a smooth start. Over the first few weeks of school your child will be involved in many activities that will assist them to build connections with their peers and teachers, understand the routines and rituals of the classroom and school and also ensure their learning space and resources are organised for a term of learning. By doing all of these things, allows for your child to build a solid base from which they can launch into learning.

Year Level Newsletters

Every term, a year level newsletter is sent out on Compass to help parents understand what to expect for the term ahead. Included in the newsletter are helpful reminders, timetables, key dates and learning focus areas that are specific to the year level. The year level newsletter is great to keep handy (On the fridge door for instance) so that important information is kept at the front of mind.

Meet and Greet

Bookings are now open on your Parent Compass Portal and will close on Tuesday February 14.

Every term we conduct a formal opportunity for parents to engage with their child’s learning. In the first term it is a Meet and Greet session to be held on Wednesday February 15th. On this day students will finish school at 1pm to allow for the Meet and Greet sessions to occur.

The purpose of the Meet and Greet is to provide an opportunity for:

● Teachers and parents to meet

● Teachers to explain routines and what to expect in the classroom

● Parents to ask questions and provide information that will assist teachers to develop learning programs for their child.

In the attempt to maximise this time together, please find a few prompts that may help in the lead up to the Meet and Greet session.

* How has your child settled into the year?

* Are there any medical, social or family issues that need to be taken into account?

* What are your child’s strengths and interests?

* How is your child’s home reading going?

* What are your child’s organisational skills like?

* Any other concerns you may have.

These Meet and Greet sessions are very important in settling up the year of learning and therefore we have the expectation that all families are involved. We believe that students should always be part of these discussions, but leave the ultimate decision up to your family as to whether or not the child attends.

Victorian High Abilities Program

Congratulations to the following students who have been selected to participate in the Victorian High Abilities Program. These students will meet with other like minded students from across Victoria to focus on either Maths or English each week for the term. I know they are eagerly looking forward to the challenging work that lies ahead.

Student Resources

Once again this year we have needed to alter the way in which we organise our student learning resources. We thank everyone for their understanding as we implement the required changes to way we order and ask for parent contributions to the cost of student resources.

As you will have read on previous messages, all resources that the students will require for their learning this year will be provided in the classroom. Teachers will manage the distribution of these throughout the year. The only exception is that students in Years 3-6 are welcome to bring a pencil case and their own personal supply of pencils and textas which would be in addition to what is supplied in the classroom.

As per the new departmental guidelines, we are requesting parent financial contributions to support the purchase of these vital resources. No extra funding has been allocated to the school to cover the purchase of student resources, therefore we rely on parent contributions so we can continue to provide a broad and inclusive learning experience for all students.

Special thanks to all those who have paid the requested contributions via our QKR app.

We have currently received just over 50% of parent contributions.

Payment can be made via the Qkr app or by ringing the school office. 53413560.
