GOAL SETTING

At this time each year we consider it really important to assist our students to focus their learning through goal setting.

Goal setting is a powerful process for thinking about your ideal future, and for motivating yourself to turn your vision of this future into reality. By knowing precisely what you want to achieve, you know where you have to concentrate your efforts. It is also helpful to quickly spot the distractions that can so easily lead you astray.

By setting sharp, clearly defined goals, students can measure and take pride in the achievement of their goals and see forward progress. This helps to raise self-confidence, as they are able to recognize their ability and competence in achieving the goals that they have set.

To assist students in their goal setting, we spend time in Extended Pastoral with the Pastoral Teacher on the goal setting process using the SMART goals structure. See the attached visual.

Students are asked to reflect upon previous experience in their learning, of what worked well for them in the past, and obstacles which may have impacted their learning.

Students will establish their goals and upload them onto Simon so that they can reflect on them over the course of the year, adjust where needed, and strive to achieve them. Pastoral Teachers will then be able to monitor their students learning and achievement of goals over the course of the year.

Hopefully this will also create opportunities for you to have conversations with your child about their learning and how they are going with achieving their goals. We also encourage you to make an appointment with your child’s Pastoral Teacher later this term at Student Progress Meetings.
