The real world of work

Students in our Special Education classes

Special Education and Work Experience

During Term One and Term Two, 24 students from the Special Education classes participated in the work experience program.   Our students were hosted by a number of employers, including Thorndale Foundation, Werrington (a sheltered workplace for people with disabilities), Coles, Woolworths and Big W Stores at Liverpool  and Bunnings Bonnyrigg.

Engaging in various tasks including packing, unpacking, weighing, tamper sealing, stacking, filling shelves, facing products up, simple assembling tasks, labelling, stock returns, stock replenishment and recycling, students showed great enthusiasm in carrying out the allocated duties under staff supervision.

This work experience program was organised with the objective of providing students general exposure to real work environments; to practice job-specific skills such as organising, communication, teamwork, problem solving, responsibility, planning, self-management, practical learning, using Opal cards for travel and use of work related technology.

Each placement was arranged to reflect the students’ identified strengths, abilities and interests. This provided each student with the opportunity to experience career options which are relevant to them; and perhaps more importantly, it enabled students to experience the real world of work.

Thank you to the employers - Bunnings Bonnyrigg, Coles, Big W and Woolworths Liverpool and Thorndale Enterprises at Werrington,  for taking the time to help our students to participate in the program.
