New Australian Curriculum

Lesson planning - our Social Sciences faculty

Social Sciences

As we reach the halfway point in the year, the Social Sciences faculty can reflect on its achievements in 2017. This has been a very busy year with the introduction of the Business Services VET course for both Year 9 and Year 11. Students are really enjoying the course content and work consistently hard to reach the competencies associated with the course.

We have been working hard in introducing the new Australian curriculum for Geography and have implemented this in 2017 with Year 9. Students have been learning new material and have enjoyed going to Minnamurra Rainforest to observe a rainforest biome. 2017 has also seen the introduction of the Australian Geography competition. Our students worked very hard in this competition and we eagerly await their results.

2018 will bring significant changes to our Geography courses in Years 8 and 10. The faculty has been working under the guidance of Ms Truong and Ms Sahid to roll out the new Year 9 course and we will further plan to introduce the interesting lessons and relevant teaching resources to supplement student learning with the new syllabus to delivered in 2018.

We are very proud of our successful teaching and reputation that that led to a record year for senior students being enrolled in our courses. There are 160 students completing their HSC courses in Business Studies, Economics, Geography and Society and Culture. With the addition of Business Services into the senior curriculum for Year 11, our subject numbers have experienced a dramatic increase with 243 Year 11 students enrolled in our courses, some students completing three of our subjects as part of their studies.

The second half of the 2017 will see our senior students prepare for the HSC. They have been busy attending HSC lecture days for Business Studies and Economics and working very hard to prepare the final submission of their Personal Interest Project for Society and Culture. In addition, Year 11 Geography students are making preparations for their fieldwork trip to the Great Barrier Reef in December. Fundraising will commence for students in Term 3 whilst the Social Sciences staff completes in a in-house challenge to see who can raise the highest amount of money to support our Geography students. Currently, Ms Ha is in the lead!

For the second half of the 2017, we hope our students continue to enjoy attending our classes as we pride ourselves in helping students find some relevance in our subjects and make connections with everyday life.

The Social Sciences Faculty would like to wish our HSC students all the best in the upcoming exams and their future endeavours.
