Curriculum Matters
Foundation
The Foundation students have returned from their holidays ready for all the amazing learning we have planned for this term.
On Monday, FMC students organized the assembly and did a fantastic job of showing the school how well they can count to 100.
We have continued to run PMP and Brain Gym on Wednesday afternoons and it is wonderful to see so many parent helpers each week. A special thanks to the Level 5 helpers who assisted with PMP last Wednesday.
As part of our Inquiry unit “Movement, Materials and Change”, yesterday the students participated in our first incursion of the term. “Lego: Bricks for Kids” visited and talked about the forces ‘push and pull’.
They followed instructions and made a robotic lego car! Other events organized this term are the Task Works excursion that is booked for Wednesday 1 August, and the Hands on Science incursion, happening on Wednesday 15 August.
This Friday we celebrate our 100th day of school! All students are excited to share their 100 things and come to school dressed as 100 year olds! We look forward to sharing our photos with you in the next newsletter.
Maths Talent Quest 2018
This week saw the closing of registration for Maths Talent Quest this year. On Monday we registered 30 projects for this year’s competition, which has to be close to, if not a record for our school. For those of you who don’t know what a Maths Talent Quest project is it involves students doing an investigation on a topic of their choice and finding as much Maths as possible in it. This year we’ve got a vast array of investigations including:
- Saving water around the house
- Walking around the world
- The maths of Mount Fuji
- Investigations on a road trip and a family holiday
- Looking at the recent soccer World Cup
- A model town built around a volcano
- Rebuilding after the recent Hawaiian volcanoes
- An investigation into the veggie boxes outside the Year 3 classrooms
- Making a lolly house
- And many more!
The students have put in a tremendous amount of work and the projects are of a high standard as always. We look forward to sending them off for judging in late August. Results should be known in the last few days of August .
There are several class projects happening this year and still happening at the moment as teachers work towards finishing their class projects in the next week or two, so ask your child if they are involved in one this year and what they are doing. This may inspire them to have a go at their own project next year.
Thanks to all those students who have put in the hard work and completed a project, we look forward to getting your results!

The Level 5 & 6 students are having cooking sessions this term. Thank you for your support in helping your child with purchasing the ingredients for their cooking session. Each child has the recipe downloaded on their iPad and know which ingredient they should bring. They have also been informed of the date they are cooking. Each child has been encouraged to put into practice what they have learnt and cook the dish for their family. It would be great if you could remind your child in Level 5 or 6 to cook the dish on an appropriate day for your family. The Level 5 children have been learning to cook fried rice and the Level 6 children have been learning to cook fried noodles. I would greatly appreciate a note from you via your child to confirm that they had cooked the meal and to know how they went with the cooking task.
Thank you!
