College Advisory Council Nominations

The College Advisory Council is calling for prospective College members who may wish to be part of an Advisory Council.  This is a great opportunity to be of service to the College, promote its mission and contribute to the future development of St Augustine’s.  More detail can be found via this link

Congratulations Madison

The Fred Hollows Humanity Award recognises Year 6 students who follow in Fred’s footsteps by making a positive difference in their community. It celebrates students who show compassion, integrity and kindness in their everyday lives, just as Fred did.

Congratulations to Madison Steele who was nominated by the Years 5 and 6 teachers for her contribution to the Mini Vinnies team and her ability to show empathy and kindness in everything she does.

MacKillop Art Exhibition

The MacKillop Art Exhibition showcases student artwork from the Visual Arts Learning Area, across the Sandhurst Diocese and it is held every year in the Bendigo Cathedral.

This year we are proud to announce that St Augustine's students Indra Hubble, Laura Graetz, Lily Murtagh, Charlotte Pegoraro and Zoe Arnold, have had work selected for entry into this event.

Congratulations and good luck!

St Augustine's Years 5-12 Writing Competition

During Term 3, St Augustine’s ran it's first Writing Competition for Years 5-12 students. Students were given a theme, depending on their age group, and had free choice on how they addressed that theme within their writing. They could create a narrative, write poetry, a song, write a recount, a persuasive essay, the opportunities were endless!

The 5-8 theme was Memories. The 9-12 theme was Metamorphosis.

We had seven wonderful entries, from across the different year levels! It was wonderful to see all of the different interpretations of the themes! Our wonderful authors were Zoe Gibson, Amelia Simpson, Molly Farran, Skye McKiernan, Katherine Wagner, Gargayee Satish-Gowda and Elleina Suarez.

At the commencement of Term 3, after all the entries had been collected, our panel of ‘expert’ judges, staff from across the College, read through the entries and placed their votes anonymously. It was a very tough competition, with all of the entries being fantastic! Because of the strong competition, we ended up having a 5-8 winner and runner up, and a 9-12 winner.

Molly Farran was our 5-8 winner, and Amelia Simpson was our runner up. Gargayee Satish-Gowda was our 9-12 winner. All our competitors enjoyed a hot chip lunch on Thursday 11th November, where our winners were awarded their prizes; book vouchers!

We cannot wait for 2022, where we can run another writing competition, and have even more entries! Stay tuned in early Term 1, to find out more! All our competitors have also won house points towards the St Augustine's House Cup!

Enjoy a small excerpt from our wonderful entries!!

Memories

5-8 Community

Zoe Gibson

A Lifetime

“As I grew older I learnt to talk, walk and to write. As I grow older, I shall pass on my memories and skills to the young and old.”

Amelia Simpson (5-8 Runner Up)

“Now it’s a year later, and Mum yelled at me to clean my room and get everything out from under my bed. So I did, and you will never guess what I found. Jason’s teddy bear. It still smells like him, all the memories of sneaking into bed with him when I was scared, and him giving me his teddy bear when I was scared come flooding back. This is a memory I will keep forever in my heart, rest easy Jason.”

Skye McKiernan

“We had just arrived and I was so excited to see everyone! My aunties, and uncles and cousins. It was Easter and we were all camping together at the Wangaratta Caravan Park… We bribed nan with $100 to jump into the pool, but all she was worried about was her bucket hat getting wet, it was so funny!”

Molly Farran (5-8 Winner)

The Number 1 Rule

“For thousands of years, there has been a list of rules. No one has ever questioned them, never disobeyed them. They are simply there. We live in a society that has been perfectly curated, every detail accounted for without a single loophole…  I don’t know what to think, is it worse not being able to speak of the future or not saying a word of the past? I’m honestly not sure. It will take me many months to figure that out.”

Metamorphosis

9-12 Community

Gargayee Satish-Gowda (9-12 Winner)

Tell Me Darkness

“Tell me Darkness. What is it like being the cause of the universe’s entire destruction? The body of pure shadow hid beneath a void of emptiness. Soulless whispers echoed across the deserted plains, their words mixing with the faint, sharp breaths of nightmare itself. His condensation puffs of air trailed behind him, leaving a string of murky smoke whenever his feet sunk into the coarse, black sand… And then, for the first time in what seemed like centuries. For the first time since he trudged through the empty plains of sand. For the first time since his own delusions of desire had overtaken his body. For the first time since those voices in his head pounded against his throbbing skull. For the first time since the universe died. Light smiled…”

Katherine Wagner

Time

“It’s funny how quickly things can change. All it takes is a single word, a choice made, and a life can be irreversibly and irrevocably changed forever… The questions torment in ways a living soul cannot imagine. When you lose, you ask why. Why did they have to die? Perhaps you could have prevented it?... Time is a chain reaction… Time evolves, exploring, changing and warping, until the choices made a millennia ago by family and friends and those lost, create something new… Wondering is what replaces the numbness. Sharp as the barbs around your heart… Numbness is addictive. You start to crave the hours you feel nothing. Each morning the agony is bearable knowing it will be gone by evening… After all, everything continues. Doesn’t it?”

A Collection of Poems

whatever vessel I have come in

pour myself into

I am overflowing

brimming with passion

with life

transcending into something unusual

something different

hands change into a caress

glances turn to soft looks

smirks are smiles

and love is no longer love –

it is you.

~~~~
transformation
is not smooth sailing
it is not all sunshine and rainbows
it is dark and heavy
painful, pushing at buttons,
teetering you over the edge
exposing truths, you have tried to hide
uncovering secrets that
you never have wanted to remember
to surface
you will face your demons
eliminating you, before becoming you
