Music News

To all our music community, welcome back. It is great to have everybody back in one place and what a place we have now! The beautiful Tullow Centre has been the talk of the school over the past two weeks and most of our musicians have been in to either rehearse in ensembles or have private lessons in the big spacious rooms. All of our instrumental staff are delighted with the upgrade in their teaching environment and even I have found myself practising far more regularly in the building. This will give all of our students the chance to experience music in a professional and lovely environment. I look forward to the performances we will give, if and when we get the chance to perform them!

Virtual Soirees

Last week our instrumental teachers, Jeff Vague and Savannah Blount -Woodwind, Jenny Vallins and  Alison Budgen -Flute,  Katy Addis - Brass, Lizzie Koutnesova- Violin, Conor Anderson-Vague - Drums, Sharon Batterham - Voice, Anita Marcou - Piano all hosted  virtual soiree evenings where students presented videos of their solo performances for parents and friends across the Zoom platform. Students gave a little introduction to their performance live before the recording was played. I'm sure this was a preferred option for both students and parents. The students only had video nerves rather than live performance butterflies and the parents didn't have to leave their living room to see and hear the concert. Live performance is by far the preferred option of most audiences but in these Covid times this was a great alternative. My thanks to all of the above instrumental staff for their professionalism and skill in guiding our girls into this new technological world. We all learnt a lot about recording during this time.

Brass Fanfare

Ms. Katy Addis was far from idle across the extended break organising all of her brass students to perform and record a brass fanfare entitled "the Bugler's Dream." You may have heard this fanfare played in relation to the Olympic Games. It was written by Leo Arnaud and was used by John Williams at the start of his Olympic Fanfare for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.  The video was put together by one of our ex students, Alisha Turone and I would really like to thank her for the many hours she put in to create this. Can I also just pass on my thanks to all of the music parents who have supported their daughters in music lessons across this time. I recognise music tuition is expensive but I also recognise the enormous amount of joy and happiness music making, whether virtual or live, brings to our community. Our girls are delightful, thoughtful and hard working and it lifts the entire school when our ensembles present music. Long may it continue.
