Orange Weekend Away – 17 July 2021

St Pius X College travel to Kinross Wolaroi School on Saturday 17th July. Traditionally, many families use this as a weekend to getaway and to that end, the Rugby Supporters Club have organised dinner on the Friday night at the Lord Anson and put rooms on hold at the Mercure Hotel.

You can book directly with the Hotel on 02-63625611 and mention that you are part of the St Pius X College Chatswood Rugby Club booking for Friday 16th July.

If you were interested in staying at the Mercure Hotel we recommend you book in ASAP as we only have a limited number of rooms put on ‘hold’ – (obviously there are other accommodation venues in Orange that you may prefer to stay at, though as Orange is a major regional centre, accommodation can book out well in advance of events).

A bus will be available for those students who cannot make their own way to Orange which will depart Anderson Street Chatswood at 6:15 am and return at the conclusion of the 1st XV match. Students will be asked to sign up to get the bus with the coaches over the coming weeks.

Rugby Supporters' Club Committee Fundraising Events

The St Pius X Rugby Supporters' Club raise funds that go directly back into the Rugby program. In previous years, the Supporters' Club has provided significant funds for external coaching, rugby specific physio, tour contributions, tour clothing and kit etc.

Last year due to COVID-19, fundraising was put on hold, meaning the club is desperate to re-coup funds to contribute again during the 2021 season.

At the last Rugby Committee meeting, it was agreed that the three fundraising focuses this season would be a Monster Raffle, the Rugby Club Dinner (on Friday 30 July) and the Golf Day, held later in the year.

The success of these events relies on the support of everyone in the Rugby Community. Please support the events above through your attendance and through selling raffle tickets when they become available.

Another way you could help is by reaching out to your known contacts to donate prizes for the raffle and Rugby dinner. In the past, prizes have included accommodation in venues like Noosa and the Hunter Valley, services like photography sessions provided, not to mention memorabilia, tickets to events, toys or sporting gear for children, money can’t buy experiences with celebrities or adrenaline based activities to name a few. The rugby supporters committee is asking the community to come together and consider how they, or someone they know could donate to these events.

Please contact myself: JLynch@stpiusx.nsw.edu.au or Rugby Club President Paul O’Neill: paoneill21@gmail.com if you can contribute in any way.

ISA Representative Football

We are so proud of our ISA Opens Representative side who came Runners Up in the NSWCIS Championships yesterday at Valentine Park. We ended up a single point behind CAS knocking over big hitters GPS and AICIES by 2-1. Winning four and losing just once we went pretty close going down 1-0 to CAS by a penalty kick. On the selection front our brilliant SPX keeper Pat Moore made the NSWCIS squad with an almost flawless five game performance. He had made it previously at the U16 level two years back.

Oscar Martin, our 23 goal rampaging SPX Centre Forward, made it as a shadow player in the U16s.

Mr Steve Quilty - ISA Football Coach

ISA Tennis

Being halfway through the season our teams are really coming together and showing some great tennis skills and sportsmanship. All our divisions were up against tough teams last weekend and only our Division 10, 14 and 16 teams coming away with victories.

This weekend is the last round before we competition break resumes in Term 3. Most of our teams are playing against our traditional rivals, St Patrick’s College, as well as St Augustine’s, St Paul’s and St Spyridon’s.  Check the draw below.

Winter Squash

The penultimate round of Squash for Term 2 was played last Saturday. Home matches at Willoughby provided the following results:

  • The firsts have kept their grand final hopes alive with a solid victory over Barker.
  • SPX 2 all showed improvement on the court despite going down to a strong Knox outfit.
  • SPX 4 were too strong for the Falcons.
  • SPX 6 Vs. SPX 7 provided some entertaining rallies and one of the longest games of the round with Lachlan Giang defeating Ben Buono 23 – 21 in the fourth game to finally take the match.
  • The thirds lost a close match at Knox and SPX 5 performed well without victory at Thornleigh.
  • Best wishes to all teams for their Round 6 matches next Saturday.

Mr Justin Varjavandi - Squash Convenor

Cross Country

Last week provided the opportunity for our Cross-Country team to convert their months of hard work into a competitive race at the ISA Selection Carnival. Sydney Equestrian Centre provided a great course and the weather was conducive to fast racing. As the host school, we also had the role of student helpers, making for plenty of course-side support for our athletes. After a few late scratchings, St Pius X took a squad of 37 competitors to challenge the best in the ISA, led ably by our captain, Matthew North, and his experienced Yr 12 cohort.

The U12’s and U13’s got us underway on the 3km course, with Jude Cuninghame and James Patchett our respective best performers. James finished a commendable 14th, just shy of the top 10 that gain automatic selection for the CIS Carnival.

Our intermediate performers on the 4km course produced some cracking results. In the U14’s Riley Watt medalled in 3rd place, finishing the last kilometre or so of the race with one shoe after losing it on the course. Hamish Tooher gained 20th place, rewarded for months of superb training with the squad. After a blitzing run, Jacob Magner took home the Silver medal in the competitive U15’s race and is joined in the ISA team by Quinton Crispe who finished 8th. Ryan Jom and Darcy Keenlyside were the pick of our U16’s, both in the top 25 after strong runs.

We certainly saved the best till last with our Senior Boys Division. Our U17’s were our strongest team. Simon Magner blitzed the field to win, beating daylight into 2nd place. Josh Brown took 13th, Chris Zilifian 16th, William Walsh-Penny 18th and Luka Krizan 19th – a fantastic team effort. In the Opens race, our captain lived up to the hype and won the race in style. With Ben Ferguson coming 12th and Dominic Panozzo 17th we banked plenty of points in the overall competition. The Senior Boys captured first place overall, lifting the shield for the first time in the school’s history.

In addition to our top 10 finishers and after some withdrawals, we now have the following as reserves for CIS: Josh Brown and Ben Ferguson both 1st reserve and James Patchett 2nd reserve.

Congratulations to all athletes in the manner they prepared and ran at the Carnival. Thanks to our external distance coach, Izzy Thornton-Bott, who prepared the boys so professionally at training, and also to Ms Lee, Mr Lacey and Ms Janes who assisted with the team and the host school duties.

Senior Swimming

Last Friday Nicholas Gladen competed for the CIS at the NSW All Schools Swimming Carnival. It was a great day for Nicholas. He came 2nd in the 50m Backstroke, 4th in the 100m Backstroke and 7th in the 50m Freestyle.

These awesome results would have qualified Nicholas to swim in the School Sport Australia Swimming Championship but unfortunately it has been cancelled this year. Nevertheless, this is the first time a student at St Pius has come this far in school swimming. We congratulate Nicholas on his outstanding swimming season for the College.
