National Reconciliation Week: More than a Week

Our National Reconciliation Week exhibit in the SRC features students’ work from Year 9 RE classes. The works show the depth of understanding of the injustice suffered by First Nation people our Year 9 students have developed through classroom studies and independent research.

As well, the exhibit of our library collection is diverse and includes picture books, short stories, biographies as well as factual histories. It makes it possible for every student to further develop their understanding of First Nation people and reconciliation.

Patrick and Michael (photographed with the exhibition) will undertake the Red Dirt excursion along with Year 9, 10 & 11 students these holidays. This trip will connect students with First Nation people in western NSW. Our library’s exhibit demonstrates our College community’s commitment to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and to actively contribute to the Reconciliation process. A process that extends far beyond a week and is supported by information and resources in the library.

Big Science Competition

Recently, our students from Years 7 to 10 competed in the Big Science Competition. This competition, run by Australian Science Innovations, was free this year to celebrate 35 years participating in the International Olympiads... as they are on the search for more students interested in science who could benefit from their enrichment programs. To further celebrate, there were 10 major prizes on offer to any Australian students who registered for the Big Science Competition.

Although the results are yet to be processed and distributed, we received exciting news on Monday afternoon, that TWO of our students were lucky enough to win TWO of the major prizes.

Congratulations to Kai Ashley (Year 8) who won a Segway eScooter and to Douglas Braddock (Year 10) who won an iPad 32GB 8th Generation. We are so happy for these boys and very proud of the large number of students who participated in this competition from St Pius X College. We look forward to receiving their results soon.

National Youth Science Forum 2022

The NYSF Year 12 Program to be held in January 2022 offers an exciting range of in-person and digital science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) experiences for participants across Australia. In 2022, the NYSF will deliver a 12-day program from 10-25 January via a combination of in-person and digital STEM experiences. 2022 participants will experience everything the NYSF is famous for, including keynote speakers, lectures, hands-on workshops, debates, expos and enriching social activities. In-person STEM visit days and events will be held over a week of the program at major city hubs across the country, enabling students to meet each other and network with like-minded peers. A continuous program of digital events will run alongside the in-person events meaning the program is accessible to all. This option also means the NYSF experience is still accessible and stimulating should there be a COVID-19 hotspot emerge.

  2. Predicting
  3. Questioning
  4. Monitoring
  5. Visualising
  6. Summarising

Last week we highlighted the third strategy “Questioning”. This week the focus is on “Monitoring”. This strategy allows students to determine whether they understand what they are reading and take steps to repair comprehension before continuing to read.
