The 2020 Collegian

Copies of the 2020 Collegian school magazine have now been distributed to the eldest St Pius X College student in each family. I take this opportunity to commend the editing team, Mr Tony Cunneen, Mrs Tracy Bradley and Mrs Linda Gregor along with all staff and students who have contributed on an excellent account of a unique school year in 2020. If your son is yet to collect your family's edition in the first instance he should approach his Pastoral Care Teacher / Year Coordinator for the copy set aside for him.

Red Dirt Immersion

Plans continue for the Red Dirt Immersion which travels to the Warrumbungles, Coonabarabran, Walgett, Brewaarina, Bourke and Dubbo between the 20 – 26 June. Our Reconciliation Assembly guest Mr Phil Good addressed a group briefing last Monday. The group will visit Aboriginal cultural sites of significance and conduct sports activities for the Primary schools of these remote communities. We are looking forward to the trip albeit with a watchful eye and contingencies prepared for the weather, local conditions and mice plague situation.

Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews

A reminder to all parents that Year 5 – 10 parent, student teacher interviews will be conducted online via the Whereby platform from 1.30 pm – 5.30 pm on Thursday 17 June and 8.00 am – 5.30 pm on Friday 18 June, with teachers available according to their professional responsibilities and other duties at those times. Term 2 lessons will conclude from 12.00 pm on Thursday 17th to allow students and staff to travel home and/or prepare for the interviews.

Over the coming days we will hold the Parent information nights outlined below on the Chatswood Campus premises in our largest open space in the College Gym.

We are asking that parents be mindful of our COVID Safety Plans which emphasise:

  1. Do not attend if you are sick or experiencing flu like symptoms
  2. QR Code into the school and leave accurate attendance record
  3. Practice good hygiene and sanitise hands
  4. Allow time and space to others to physical distance as far as possible.

Year 11 2022 Subject Selection Evening

We have requested that only one parent per student attend this event tonight so that numbers comply with our Physical Distancing requirements. We are planning to record the presentation for those who are unable to attend. Please stay tuned and / or contact Mr Brannan for information.

Year 7 – 8 Study skills evening Monday 7 June

This is a very informative high school study skills presentation which is capped to approx. 300 per the Trybooking link below, to facilitate physical distancing, and once again our COVID Plan stipulates only one parent attend with their son.

For both the above events, you are welcome to park in the school yard or surrounding precinct and allow ample time on entrance and egress to facilitate physical distancing.

Once again if one parent only accompanies each student we will be able to manage numbers and spacing.

Please contact Mr Brannan if you missed the cut off on Trybooking as it might be possible to access an online version of the presentation from Dr Prue Salter and certainly we will look to book her next year for a presentation for Year 7 2022 which could also cater for some overflow.

Please use the following Trybooking link to book:  https://www.trybooking.com/758453

Athletics Carnivals

The College Athletics Carnivals, being held next Tuesday (Senior School) and Wednesday (Junior School) are compulsory events which connect the students to each other and the college in a fun community atmosphere led by our Senior Students. Any absences will be noted, communicated and followed up with students required to make up the time and commitment to the College community.

College Co-curricular Representation

All students and parents are reminded that the College Diary should note a learning outcome from each lesson of the day and signed by parents on a weekly basis. Page 12 also provides a template for each student to record their Co-curricular representation. Each student should be representing the College in at least two terms of co-curricular activity each year. See your Pastoral Teachers, Year Coordinator or Convenors of Sport to address any concerns here.

Uniform

As the Winter season takes hold I remind all students and parents that students are expected to be in presentable full winter uniform including College blazer, grey socks, polished black shoes, tie and standard belt.

The College rain jacket is a part of the tracksuit and should only be worn with winter uniform during rain. The College jumper and/or thermal layers covered under the uniform should be used to keep warm.

With all representatives of the Winter Season in full ISA season as of this weekend I remind all that they need to be in full uniform, either Sports or Winter, as per the Coaches' instructions when they travel to / arrive at any venue to represent the College.  Full PDHPE uniform can be worn on sports days / between consecutive PDHPE lessons, however if the uniform is not complete eg incorrect shorts, students must get changed back into school uniform.

Representative Honours

Congratulations to Chris Dimos of Year 11 who last week contested national Gymnastics. He ended up placing 6th overall, receiving Silver for his floor and parallel bars routines.  It's a great achievement given Chris’ improvement in his floor up routines!

Well done to our ISA football representatives 1st XI Captain Patrick Moore, Ethan Lush, B Giles, D Panetta, J Wong, D Bacic, O Martin, M Balverde, R Jom and Coach Mr Quilty who this week contested the NSWCIS Championships. The side was ISA’s strongest Open side for some years and placed second by a point to Combined Associated Schools.

From the team, Patrick Moore (Goalkeeper) was selected in the NSW Combined Independent Schools Open Team to contest the NSW All Schools Tournament and Oscar Martin as a shadow for the NSWCIS U/16 team.

Congratulations to Callum Fitzgibbon (Year 12) who has been selected as a referee for the NSW All Schools Football championships which is a high honour. Fewer referees are required than players are selected. Well done Callum who is also a leader of our Student Wellbeing Empowerment Team.

Best wishes to those students selected in representative rugby teams who will head off on the long weekend to all points around the state to contest State Rugby Championships.

The 13s Age group will enjoy Sunny Dubbo and be able to report back on the mice plague situation before our Red Dirt Expedition goes there in late June.

Fide et Labore

St Pius X College acknowledges our First Nations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and particularly the Cammeraygal people,

whose interconnection with this land sustained and

fulfilled them mentally, physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually,

over thousands of years.

May we learn from their wisdom.
