Visual Art

Term 3 update

It has been another busy term in the Art Room with our students engaging and making some outstanding artworks across all levels of the school.

Our Foundation students focussed on texture as well as embedding information about the art element of colour. Their fluffy koalas with a crown of Australian natives, inspired by the work of Australian artist Amanda Brooks, were a highlight.

Year 1 students have been learning how to hand sew as well as learning the language around this topic (eg. eye of the needle, fabric, thread etc). It has been a challenging task for many, however, they have persisted with amazing results.

In Year 2, students completed an acrylic painting practicing how to create tone. More recently they have been learning about 'proportions' in art , beginning with still life drawings of vegetables that they are turning into watercolour paintings.

Australian artist, Pete Cromer has been the inspiration for Year 3 students' paper collages. Each class explored a different theme (Australian Fish, Flora or Fauna) and their resulting work is eye-catching.

Year 4s created Donut sculptures after looking into the work of Pop Artist Andy Warhol. They enjoyed creating an armature from newspaper before covering it in plaster and decorating to look like an oversized donut. They truly do look edible! After this, they have researched the Japanese technique of Gyotaku (fish printing). This is a practice that fishermen used to measure fish as proof of their catch (before advances in technology!). At the time of writing, the students are producing some intricate prints of their fish designs.

Year 5s also used Pop Art, particularly the work of Claes Oldenberg, to get them going in creating food sculptures. Their cupcakes, cakes on a plate and ice creams were lots of fun to make and all very unique.

This term, Year 6s studied the work of artist and film maker Tim Burton. The very distinct characteristics of his spooky style were mimicked in the students' self-portraits.

Well done to all of our students who have worked hard this past term. I'm sure you'll agree from this snippet of works, that they have had a very successful time in the art room.
