Foundation  - Year 1/2

The Foundation to Year Two students have had another exciting week of learning opportunities.

One of the highlights from last week was preparing gifts and cards to celebrate the dads, grandfathers and other special men in our lives. Over the week, a variety of picture story books were read, cards were created and questionnaires and gifts were lovingly prepared to surprise our dads and special men who play such an important role in our families.

On Friday we shared breakfast, played games in Benny Courts before school, took lots of photos at the Father’s Day selfie stand and even had the opportunity to take photos with a special guest - Captain America!

After the whole school assembly, the dads, grandfathers and special men who mean so much to us all were given an opportunity to visit our learning spaces. Together we played games, read books, completed a quiz or two and just had fun being together!

Last Friday, as researchers, we also had time and the opportunity to find out about how to be safe around water. Zara from Life Saving Victoria conducted an incursion for the whole school. The program Zara presented included important information about how to be safe around water which included swimming between the red and yellow flags at the beach, the importance of reading the signage displayed at beaches, identifying people who can help you in an emergency, being SunSmart and the importance of supervision around water, such as at the beach, at the pool and at rivers and lakes.

Three key things that Zara reminded us of were:

  1. Never swim alone
  2. Swim between the red and yellow flags
  3. Parents need to have their eyes on their children at all times

As Summer approaches, we want everyone to be safe and to enjoy being around the water.

We hope everyone enjoyed Father’s Day yesterday.

Looking forward to another exciting week of learning opportunities as we enter the last couple of weeks of Term 3.

Please remember to send your child’s hat to school. As of today, Monday 5th September,  hats are required to be worn at recess and lunchtime.

Year 3/4

As readers and writers, we are learning to understand and interpret the figurative language within poems. The language features we have been focusing on are onomatopoeia, similes and metaphors. Take a look at our creative poems!

Year 3/4BP assembly
Year 3/4BP assembly

On Friday 2nd September, we celebrated Father’s Day with 3/4BP hosting the whole school prayer and assembly. Afterwards, our Dads were invited into the learning spaces to complete an activity together. We played games and made cards for our Dads. We wish all the Dads in our community a very Happy Fathers Day!

On Friday the 2nd of September, we were fortunate enough to have Lizzie Blandthorn, State Parliamentarian and Member of the Labour Party come and talk to our students. Lizzie visited the 3/4 Year Level to talk to the students about some of the decisions she makes in her day-to-day life.

Lizzie explained to the students the three levels of the Australian Government, the two houses of Parliament and how democracy in Victoria helps her to make just decisions that are fair for all. Lizzie showed us photos and talked about some of the decisions she has made in our local community. She explained the process of making these decisions and how they are made to benefit the safety and well-being of all local community members.

We thank Lizzie  Blandthorn for her visit to St. Fidelis.

On Friday the 2nd of September, Life Saving Victoria visited our school to inform us about water safety, lifesaving and emergency response skills. It was a very engaging session and we learnt a lot. Thank you LSV!

We can’t believe how fast the term has flown!

Year 5/6

Exciting news and happening in the 5/6 area.

Father’s day celebration

It was great to see all the dads, grandads and carers join us as we celebrated Father’s day. The morning began with a yummy breakfast, outdoor activities, assembly and time in our learning space.  The children were given the opportunity to spend time with their dads engaging in learning, playing games and reading with their child. Hope you all had an enjoyable day.

Lifesaving incursion

Last Friday our learners participated in a Lifesaving incursion. This program is for all primary school children and is offered at every level.  The lifesaving Education Program is designed to create ‘Everyday Lifesavers’ out of Victorian students by teaching them practical and engaging water safety, lifesaving and emergency response skills. These skills empower students to make safe aquatic-related decisions while enjoying their local waterways. During the incursion, the children engaged in various real life experiences and focusing on how to respond when faced with these challenges. The following areas were discussed and re-enacted.

  • Supervision: ‘Never swim alone’ and ‘Always swim with a friend’
  • Swim between the red and yellow flags
  • Identify people who can help you (role of a lifeguard)
  • Read the safety signs & check the conditions
  • Lifejacket safety
  • How to identify and avoid dangers
  • Know what to do in an emergency situation
  • Sun Smart

Human development parent only evening:

Parents are invited to attend the Human development evening (The wonder of living years) information evening. This evening is designed to give parents the opportunity to preview material, ask questions and consider the importance of their role in this aspect of their child's healthy development. It is important that all parents attend this evening as it enables you to engage in dialogue and answer any questions that your child may have.  As we continue our journey and partnership with our children’s education we look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday the 7th of September at 7.00 pm in the SLA building.

Matific Olympiad:

This year we are all very excited to have the opportunity to engage in the Matific Olympiad math competition.  The Matific Olympiad is a friendly online math competition aimed at improving our learner’s confidence and math skills. The competition is open to all primary school students.  The competition begins on Monday the 5th of September until Friday the 9th of September.  Good luck and enjoy the challenge.

Religious Education Vision statement:

Our learners have been engaging in unpacking our school vision and the core values, focusing on Respect, Empathy and Welcoming.  They have been engaged in documenting what each of these values represents to the learning community of St Fidelis. Our learners were given the opportunity to document a statement that reflects how we see these core values at our school.  On the completion of this documentation, the learners designed a symbol that represents their chosen core value.  Our learners were given the opportunity to vote for the symbol that they feel best represents their core value.

A reminder that our school vision and core values will be launched on Wednesday the 7th of September at 9.00 am. This will take place in the hall. We invite all parents and carers to attend this event.

Thank you and enjoy your week from the 5/6 team.

Annette Gasbarro, Michelle Casamento, Olivia Sargent & Viviana Clarke.
