The Wonder of Living Family Enrichment Program

The Wonder of Living Family Enrichment Program (value-based sex education) is coming to our school. We are offering a Parent Only Information Evening on Wednesday 7th September for Parents of years 5 and 6 on-site at 7 pm.

The Parent/Child sessions for years 5 and 6 will be online on Wednesday, October 26th  at 7 pm.

The purpose of the program is to encourage good communication between parents and children about these important topics. It will be conducted by Open Doors Education, an ecumenical Christian non-profit organisation. 

Open Doors is also the creator of the Wonder of Living video series which is used during the sessions.  This value-based, family-friendly series has been reviewed by MACS and has alignment with Catholic teaching and values about human sexuality.  Open Doors has over 30 years of experience and an excellent reputation for its sensitive, engaging presentation of this program in schools.

What topics are covered in the Wonder of Living videos?  Information in the video series builds sequentially: 

VIDEO 1 A New Baby! suitable for Years 3 – 6. 

Content - development & birth of baby told as a family story (definition of sexual intercourse is NOT given); we are uniquely created. Other messages - families love and care; talking to trusted grownups when you need support.

VIDEO 2 And Now There’s Me suitable for Years 5 – 6. 

Content - amazing human body; reproductive system, explanation of sexual intercourse & how a baby begins (given in the context of married love and including preliminary information about the menstrual cycle). Other messages – the importance of family, different kinds of families, re-thinking screen time, talking to trusted grownups.

VIDEO 3 I’m Stepping Out, suitable for Years 5 – 6.

Content - puberty facts for boys and girls, emotional ups and downs. Other messages - handling change and uncertainty, talking to a trusted grownup when you need support or information, identifying social media pressure (body perfection, selfie culture, viewing and sharing internet pornography) and acting in ways that are safe.

The Parent Only Information Session will give you the opportunity to 

• find out about the Parent/Child sessions
• pre-view video content and ask questions
• consider your child, sexuality and values – don’t leave it to the media!
• get tips and encouragement and find out about helpful resources
• You will also have the opportunity to buy/order The Wonder of Living Book on the night for home - $20. 

It has been said that the media, who loves your children the least, tells them the most about sex, while you who love your children the most, often tell them the least.  Open Doors is committed to empowering parents as the primary educators of their children in the area of sexuality education. Even if you do not intend to bring your child to the Family Night, the Parent Information Night will be valuable for you as a parent.
