LITERACY - Vira Pirrotta

Hi All,

Last week I acknowledged the winners of our ‘BE A STORYTELLER’ competition. I have attached the winning entries for all to read. Congratulations again to Isabella Joson 5/6OS and Ava Soares 3/4KD. Here are the winning entries.

NAPLAN

In May this year, all students in Years three, five, seven and nine across Australia participated in the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).  I am pleased with the achievement of our students, especially in light of our last two years of remote learning and Covid.

As you look at your child’s results, keep the following points in mind: NAPLAN testing is only one type of assessment that your child will undertake during the year. As a school, we regularly complete Literacy and Numeracy testing and employ various assessment strategies to determine your child's achievements and learning needs.

Please also consider that the NAPLAN test was in May. You would appreciate that there was still a great deal of the curriculum to be covered. It was also the first time that the students completed the NAPLAN assessment online.

Your child’s results will be available at the end of the week.

Thanks

Vira

Maths around the school

Our grade 1/2AP students had a great time representing multiplication in various ways.

They loved using the QR codes to find the matching number sentences to the pictures and repeated addition sentences.  Here is what a few students said:

“We are doing multiplication, I like that you can split it into groups,” Ariana

“ I like everything” Felix

“ We are scanning QR codes to get an equation and to match the ones on the wall” Clara

Our juniors were also very engaged in investigating arrays.

They started to make their own, describing the number of rows and number in each row. They then decided to collaborate with each other and make the largest array they could. This was a 37 x 13 array. Maddie worked out, she could find out how many tiles. She said she was splitting the 13 into 10 and 3 and working it out in parts. She did 37 x 10 = 370 and then broke 37 into 10+ 10+10 +7 and multiplied these all by 3 to get 111. She then added these two parts to get 370 + 111 to make 481.  Amazing calculating and number sense.

LIFE-SAVING VICTORIA INCURSION

Before we know it, summer will be upon us and people will be heading for the water to relax, play and stay cool. Although this is a fun time, it is also important for everyone to remain safe around our beaches, rivers, lakes and public or private swimming pools.

To educate our students on the importance of water safety, Life-Saving Victoria (LSV) conducted water safety lessons in the hall for our whole school on Friday 2 September.

LSV’s Lifesaving Education Programs are designed to create ‘Everyday Lifesavers’ out of our students by teaching them practical and engaging water safety, lifesaving and emergency response skills. These skills empower students to make safe aquatic-related decisions while enjoying their local waterways.

The programs are offered as progressive learning experiences, suitable for all year levels.

The following areas were covered during Friday’s program:

  • Supervision: ‘Never swim alone’ and ‘Always swim with a friend'
  • Swim between the red and yellow flags
  • Identify people who can help you (role of a lifeguard)
  • Read the safety signs & check the conditions
  • Lifejacket safety
  • How to identify and avoid dangers
  • Know what to do in an emergency situation
  • SunSmart

Sun Smart

Although the weather is still a bit up and down at the moment, the UV levels are on the rise so it's time to find your child's school hat or purchase a new one! We also encourage parents to ensure that children are wearing sunscreen when appropriate.

From Monday 5th September all students must wear their hats when outside.

ITALIAN - Rosa Fokianos

Buongiorno a tutti!

I hope everyone had un fantastico weekend and was able to celebrate La Festa del Papà

(Father’s Day) with loved ones…including papà, nonno, zio or a special male figure in your family. Perhaps your child/ren organised a special colazione (breakfast) for their papà? Whatever they did, I’m sure it would have been greatly appreciated. 😍

To help celebrate La Festa del Papà, the children in Italian last week were involved in making something with a special message of love and gratitude. You may have read or heard messages like Ti voglio bene papà, meaning I love you dad, or Grazie per tutto che fai per me! (Thank you for all that you do for me).

The Grade 5-6’s were asked to write a special message of gratitude in Italian. Some children may have also included translations, since some dads that may not speak Italiano.

I have included in today’s newsletter article some photos taken of the various classes with their finished products. Enjoy.

Until next time…Buona settimana a tutti!
