Discovery Centre

Curriculum

We have had another exciting week in the Discovery Centre! Early in the week we were lucky enough to meet and hear from Michael Wagner, utilised humour and expression to make his stories entertaining! Students were highly engaged and enjoyed being a part of the story-telling through their voices and bodies. What an inspiring incursion to get our creative juices flowing as we continue to write to entertain!

Keep an eye out on Seesaw as we finalise activities to share with you all before the end of the term. We enjoy listening to students’ Home Talk during the week so please continue to check Seesaw regularly for the opportunity to participate. This week we heard from students all about their special person! Lenny shared that he likes to go for bike rides with his dad and his dad is good at fishing. What do you love about your dad or special person?

In Literacy, we explored Poetry as a form of writing that we can read as the audience, to be entertained. We took on the important role of both author and illustrator last week! Students created detailed illustrations of written poems to ensure that the audience could better understand the poem from the matching picture.

Have you received a special person’s card? How did it make you feel? Students made an acrostic poem all about their dad to celebrate Father’s Day or about their special person to make them feel happy, loved and excited. This week we will be writing another acrostic poem to reflect on our term! You might like to reflect at home by talking about some of the exciting events and activities we have been a part of, like our swimming program, Indonesian Day, Book Week and 100 Days of School!

In Maths, students continued to utilise problem solving strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. The repetition of these strategies and problems, helps to build up the students’ fluency and number sense so that they can choose and use the most appropriate process for a given problem. This week we will be deepening our understanding of place value by using materials to represent tens and ones. Using bundles of ten and single icy pole sticks, students will make, name, record and compare two-digit numbers and beyond. You might compare the ages of people in your family or notice the tens and ones of letter box numbers when you are driving to school or walking to the park!

In Wellbeing, we have continued to explore Respectful Relationships Topic 7 (Gender and Identity) and Topic 8 (Positive Gender Relations) by challenging stereotypical roles in the workforce. Students decided that anyone can be a chef, dancer, soccer player or teacher. We know that we have the ability to decide what job we would like if we work hard to achieve it and have practised saying that our ‘gender doesn’t choose what I like, I can choose’.

We ended the week on a high at our Junior Disco! It was incredible to see so many Foundation students embracing our theme of 'Bright and Colourful' and showcasing their epic dance moves! Congratulations to those students who received a 'Best Dressed' or 'Best Dancer' award and to all Foundation students on a wonderful Disco. Thank you to our amazing P&F Team for your support in hosting such a fantastic event, especially after the Father's Day and Special Person's stall. What a stand out effort! Thank you!

We hope you had lovely weekends surrounding by loved ones!
