Independence Centre

Curriculum

Selamat siang!

We had another great week in the Independence Centre this week!

On Tuesday we had the Michael Wagner author visit where he shared how he gets the ideas for his stories. It was a very humorous and engaging session with students being very motivated to put his strategies into play!

In Maths, we looked at data and graphs. We interpreted the results from the Attitude to Schools Survey and the Pivot Survey which addressed student perception of teaching and learning in the classroom. Following this, students provided feedback with how their experience at school can be improved. Students then completed their own project where they made a new question to add to these surveys and collected and represented the results in graphs.

Reading sessions were focused around learning strategies to interpret comprehension questions including identifying key words in the question and scanning for specific information related to the question. Students were required to use relevant information from the text to form answers and provide evidence to explain their response.

In Writing, we enjoyed writing humorous limericks. We were very impressed with the quality of these poems as students had to remember a different rhyming pattern of AABBA as well as having a different number of syllables in these lines. This is the final week of our Poetry unit where students will choose a poem to publish and we will create a poetry book to keep in the library for the school to read.

In Guided Inquiry, students are working hard in their groups to finish building their model of their environmentally sustainable creation. Some students are experimenting with the program Tinkercad to be able to build another model using the 3D printer. The teamwork, creativity and problem solving on display has been great to see throughout this process and we look forward to students being able to show each other their creations when they are completed.

We couldn’t have asked for a better way to finish off the week than with our annual disco! Students definitely followed the theme with a sea of colour filling the hall. It was great to see everyone having lots of fun and showing off their best dance moves.

Have a wonderful week,

Miss Chooi, Miss Richardson, Miss Wang, Mrs McCoy, Miss Tillotson and Miss Honan
