Foundation Fun at the Farm Barn

As part of our Science Unit 'Living things and their needs' the Foundation students from Brooklyn Park visited the Hahndorf Farm Barn on 31st August.

On this cool, (but not too cold day), there was much excitement as we travelled by school bus into the Adelaide Hills (who would have thought the Heyson Tunnels could have been so much fun!) Wrapped in warm jackets and ready for action in our gumboots, we were greeted by Farmer Michael.

In the barn we were able to hold chicks, guinea pigs and rabbits and learnt how to feed lambs from bottles.

Out in the paddocks we fed horses, sheep, deer and even a camel - while keeping all our fingers intact.  We experienced first-hand how to milk a cow, and learnt quickly that you get a lot more milk when using a milk pump.

Finally, we were introduced to some reptiles - a blue tongue lizard, a bearded dragon, a water dragon and a python, which we learnt are different from snakes because they are not venomous.

On returning to school the children were asked to choose their favourite farm activity:

  • 17 children said holding the chicks was the best!
  • 5 loved touching the reptiles
  • 1 liked feeding the animals
  • 1 preferred milking the cow

It was a fun filled day learning first hand what living things need to survive!

Student-Led Conferences

Our Junior School classrooms have been a buzz this week many families hearing their children confidently and professionally showcase their learning.

For our Brooklyn Park Campus, this is the first time our Year 3-6 students have been taken part in this style of parent 'interview'.  We look forward to expanding on this program in future years to involve Year 1/2 students also.

Students showed evidence of their academic growth by proudly acknowledging their achievements and succinctly articulating their future personal goals.

Thank you to our dedicated teachers for thoroughly preparing our students and thank you parents for actively listening and engaging so positively in celebrating your child's schooling.
