Sustainabilty & Gardening News

Hi everyone!

Gardening Fun

Our vegetable gardens are thriving in the Spring sunshine! Bok choy, silverbeet, rainbow chard, parsley, calendula, garlic chives, beetroot and carrots are all growing well! However, some little creatures have been having a feast, especially on our broccoli, and have eaten five of our plants completely! Today, we discovered the naughty culprits - big, fat slugs! We picked out all the slugs we could find hiding and rehomed them far away in another corner of the school!

Our newly installed worm buckets are working well. Today we looked after the worms in the compost buckets - they have been turning our lunch scraps into nutritious soil for the plants to grow. We used gardening forks to turn the compost and help it break down further. Worms have tiny mouths so we had fun smooshing up some of the scraps like bananas to make it easy to eat. We put shredded paper on top to make a bed for the worms and to help encourage them to come up into the buckets to eat all our scraps.

We would love to see any photos of our produce taken home being included in your dinner!  If you take a photo, please send to bnechwatal@tcs.catholic.edu.au.

Things we need!

Wooden spoons - to make decorative plant labels for our vegetable gardens.

We still need more paper bags to take our veggies home in. Please leave at the office, labelled “Miss Belinda”.

Thank you!

3/4BO’C won Nude Food this week Well done to all  who are helping reduce the amount of rubbish we create!

Some yummy ideas - a sandwich/wrap/roll, pasta with vegetables, soup, frittata or sushi, a fruit or vegetable snack, such as whole fruit, cut up veggie sticks, fruit or savoury kebab or a small salad.

There is a great booklet of ideas here
