Interview with former DSC teacher Bob Jones (1983 - 1992)

Bob Jones taught at the school during the Doncaster High School days, from 1983 until 1992. For some of these years, he was Sports Master and even produced the 1987 school production “H.M.S Pinafore”. Bob helped to pioneer the Sport and Recreation Program at the school, this meant students were physically active for more time throughout the week and were given more opportunity to participate in sport. The program was clearly ahead of its time as it was introduced into other schools some 10 years later as a result of the Moneghetti Report. The sport was a passion of Bob’s during his time at the school and has continued to be a major aspect of his life since, working in local councils as ‘Sport and Recreation Co-ordinator’ and still plays lawn bowls competitively. This program and the passion that Bob put into his job here at Doncaster provided students with more time to be physically active which, as Bob said, had a great “flow-on" effect for inter-school sport” and led to “prodigious sporting success”. Not only did Bob coach some very successful sports teams, some of his students even went onto to play in the AFL and represent Australia in the Commonwealth Games.

Bob had some insightful words for current DSC students that really can be applied to all aspects of life. “The outcomes from [school] are enhanced by how well individual [students] contribute to the collective” it isn’t so much what the college can do for you but more so what you can do for the college.
