Whitehorse Division Swimming Carnival

The School Sport Victoria Swimming season continued on Thursday 9th March with 20 students from Vermont Primary School competing in the Whitehorse Division Swimming Championships at Aquanation Ringwood.  As a school community we should be extremely proud of our swimming team and their outstanding achievements.

House Athletics Carnival

The House Athletics Carnival is always a busy day with every student participating in  high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, 100m sprint, 200m sprint and 800m.  Early next term, students will also be given the opportunity to compete in the 1500m and 80m hurdles which will be conducted on the Vermont Reserve.

After a long and close day of competition, only 25 points separated 1st and 2nd with Cantley eventually being crowned this year’s House Athletics Champions.

Once again, the highlight was the running of the teacher, parent and student 4 x 100m relay during the lunch break.  It was an extremely exciting race with the teacher’s managing to hold off a fast finishing student team.  On behalf of the school, I would like to thank our wonderful parent community for making this fun event possible.

Digi Tech - Year 3

Over the past two weeks, the Year 3 students have been looking at artificial intelligence – the ability for a computer to think and learn. Our goal was to teach the computer to recognize happy/sad emotions using emojis. We began by looking the different parts of our face and what happens to them when we are happy/sad.

Next we used a program called Teachable to train our computers and then test them for accuracy. First they used a webcam to input the data.

Then when all the data was in and the model had been ‘trained’ to look for patterns in the features, we tested our model for accuracy.

The Teachable website can be used to train computers to recognize all sorts of different things – what can you train it to learn?

Orchestra Announcement - AUDITIONS!!!

We held a meeting for students interested in joining the Orchestra on Tues 21st Feb. We had an unprecedented amount of students attend the meeting and express interest in being part of the Orchestra this year. Unfortunately, we won’t have enough space or equipment to accommodate for the amount of students who would like to be part of the Orchestra so we are going to have to hold auditions for the Orchestra this year. We have made this decision in consultation with school Leadership and the teachers involved in Orchestra. We have made a template to use for the auditions to ensure that everything is conducted in a fair manner. We will ask students to play a small part of an Orchestra piece on their instrument and test their knowledge of some of the common symbols used in orchestra music (e.g. dynamics, key signatures). We will begin auditions on Tues 14th March during normal Orchestra rehearsal time, 1:10-1:40pm in the Music Room. Please bring your instruments on Tuesday if you plan on auditioning.

Music Leaders 2023

We would like to welcome Nathan 6CP & Isabelle 6KM as our new Music Leaders for 2023. Nathan and Isabelle will be involved in assisting and planning for all our music events and groups, and they will begin working on a song a special Leader performance for assembly very soon.

Yr5 and Yr6 Production Auditions!!!

This year is a Production Year! We aim to hold a Production every second year and have two performance nights with Year 5s and Year 3s performing together and Year 4s and Year 6s performing together. Year 5 and Year 6 students are given the opportunity to audition for the main cast, students who chose not to audition will join part of the chorus and background characters along with the Yr3 and Yr4 students. An email with further details on how to audition will be sent to Year 5 and Year 6 parents.

Audition Dates:

Year 5 Auditions: Tues 14th March (slightly earlier so as not to clash with NAPLAN)

Year 6 Auditions: Mon 20th March

DRUM LESSON IN VERMONT

About Ethan by Mr Fraser

Ethan is a former VPS student who has now graduated from High School. Ethan achieved amazing results academically and in music at both High School and Primary School. Ethan is looking to expand his drum teaching this year to generate income while he attends university. He will be conducting drum lessons from his home outside of school hours in the local area.

Ethan has his AMEB Grade 8 Drum Certification and a wealth of accolades and performance experience. While he was at VPS, Ethan played in our school Rock Band and he also performed solos on both piano and drums at various school events. Ethan won the Best Drummer Award twice at the Wonnies Battle of the Bands Competition. He also received the 2016 Yr6 Graduation Music Award meaning that he was one of the most talented musicians in the school across all instruments and year levels in that particular year.

Please feel free to contact Ethan if you would like to know more about arranging drum lessons, available times and prices.
