Term 1 Wrap Up
Throughout this term the SRC have worked tirelessly to organise and bring events to life.
On February 14 we organised and ran Nossal’s most anticipated tradition, Valentines Day. The event was extremely popular, and students could purchase a fresh flower from well-established rose stalls, for anyone they’d like to show their appreciation for or to express their gratitude to their friends and peers. With a lovely performance by Nossal’s own “Jazz Combo” where the students played sensational jazz during recess, really helped set the Valentine's Day mood. This year we also introduced a Valentine's day raffle in which students and staff could purchase a $1 ticket for a chance to win an amazing gift basket filled with Valentine’s Day-themed goodies.
The fundraiser went on to donate a grand total of $190.65 out of the total earned to Disaster Aid Australia. Most arguably one of the most enjoyable days on the Nossal calendar for the students and teachers here at the school, where we got to also help make a beneficial impact to the local community too!
Among our many amazing aspects of our school, Nossal has a beautifully diverse culture. Every year we make sure to dedicate time to celebrate and embrace our multicultural school community. This year was no exception, from 27 February to 3 March, the SRC and School Captains organised Harmony Week.
Harmony Week, at its core, is about acknowledging and embracing the unity of our different cultures, traditions, background, and ethnicities. We started the week by launching a cultural wall, henna stalls during the week, and a whole-school multicultural dress up day. Throughout the week we created a Recipe Padlet, where our school community could add their favourite cultural cuisines to it. Furthermore, we were joined by Mr Kano Ravalji, who shared his experiences of immigrating to Australia from India at a very young age to inspire us to embrace our diversity and most importantly our identity. So after an exciting week, we finished with a few lovely performances from our K-pop and Bollywood dancers during lunch! We were also so lucky to watch a beautiful Sri Lankan performance, Kandyan Dancing.
The Harmony Week proceeds of $224.17 were donated to the UNICEF Earthquake Appeal in Türkiye and Syria to support those in need. Overall it was such a successful week that allowed our school to celebrate our community and diversity all together!
Likewise, the SRC have also been involved in raising funds for the Relay For Life. Every year, 151 000 Australians are diagnosed with cancer, with 39 000 of these brave Aussies unfortunately succumbing to this unforgiving disease. These numbers are overwhelming to look at, but we can make a change.
Relay for Life is a fundraiser hosted by the Cancer Council, and helps the lives of patients, survivors, and carers. The Nossal SRC along with Melbourne High School and Mac Robertson Girls High School have collaborated for this event, opening this opportunity for all year levels. We gained massive support for this event, raising over $1500 which will all be donated to the Cancer Council! Thank you to all students that volunteered and helped raise funds for the cause in Hawthorn which took place on 1 April. Overall the event was a success and everyone had a great time, either through running, walking with their friends or cheering on their team!
Another exciting milestone was opening up our first official NHS SRC Instagram account (@nossalsrc). For students, run by students, this platform will be used to advertise and communicate any important SRC notifications, events, school club promotions, achievements and more. We have had an amazing start to the year and we have many more events planned in the upcoming terms, so make sure to keep in touch!
