Introducing Emotional Literacy in P-6

This year St Agnes’ has reintroduced Respectful Relationships into our Social and Emotional Learning Curriculum. The program helps students to develop their social, emotional and positive relationship skills with others.

This term our topic is ‘Emotional Literacy’, which can be defined as the ability to understand ourselves and other people. Throughout each lesson students are able to develop the ability to understand, express and manage their emotions, build empathy and to respond appropriately to the emotions of others.

Building a large vocabulary for emotions helps to increase emotional literacy and build self-awareness and empathy for others.

Respectful Relationships is taught in Prep to Year 6 on Monday afternoons. This term students have been engaged and eager to share their different emotions and feelings through conversations, pictures and role play. The more we talk about emotions, the more they are learning to manage them effectively.
