Student Representative Council (SRC)

It is important for student leaders to participate in leadership programs because that gives them the opportunity to learn new, valuable skills and to help them to succeed!

During Term 1, SRC members and Middle School Leaders participated in two different conferences. On Monday 27th of February, Year 6, 7 and 8 SRC were involved in the Secondary Youth Leadership Conference. The Conference was designed to inspire, strengthen and empower the future leaders.

On Monday 27 March, Year 10 SRC and selected Middle School Leaders had the opportunity to attend the National Young Leaders Day. The students participated in a daylong program, where they engaged with keynote speakers, contributed to a discussion and applied their learning through interactive activates and reflection.

On Wednesday 8 March, Oakleigh Grammar celebrated International Women’s Day. The aim of the IWD 2023 “EmbraceEquity” campaign theme was to get the world talking about Why equal opportunities aren't enough.  Year 11 SRC organised a cake stall for Middle and Senior School with a big variety of sweets.

Also, they made purple ribbons and sold them to our school community to support the day and celebrate each woman and their success in our society.  This was a very successful event and $624 raised which have been donated to the United Nations Women Australia’s IWD 2023 Campaign.  Congratulations to Year 11 SRC and their helpers for taking the initiative of organising this fundraiser!

Monash Women's Business Network IWD Luncheon

On Wednesday 8 March, I attended the Monash Women’s Business Network International Women’s Day luncheon with Mrs. Mascaro at the Park Royal Hotel Monash. The key note speaker was Tammy Barton, whom is the owner and director of MyBudget. Tammy shared the struggles that she encountered creating her business and explained how she overcame them, by giving tips on how to avoid making the same mistakes she made. Having purchased her own home at just 19 years old, he is now a successful business woman who is encouraging women to just start somewhere and not hold back from great business ideas in fear of failed outcomes.

It was lovely to meet all the women who are business owners in the City of Monash, networking with us and empowering one another. We were all provided with a three course meal which was delicious, and towards the conclusion of the event, door prizes were being announced. It was great to see Mrs Mascaro win one of the prizes and I also walked away with a prize! I was very pleased to have been able to attend this event. It truly was a great opportunity to speak to the women and get a good insight into business careers.

Thank you to the Monash Women’s Business Network, City of Monash Council, and the Park Royal Hotel for inviting Mrs. Mascaro and myself as representatives of Oakleigh Grammar.  It was a privilege to be invited as representatives from one of three schools in the City of Monash, where we were acknowledged and selected to attend this event.  Happy International Women’s Day!

The latest addition to the E-games Club: Sony PS5

The E-games club at Oakleigh Grammar was established several years ago to provide a platform for students from all year levels to engage with their peers in their favourite e-games.

As we know, the Sony PS5 has taken the gaming industry by storm. Its fast loading times, high-quality graphics, and advanced features have made it one of the most sought-after gaming consoles. However, the PS5 is quite expensive, making it difficult for students (or their parents!) to afford it. Showing their initiative, a number of students have raised funds to buy a PS5 for their E-games club.  Oakleigh Grammar has generously matched the funds raised and purchased the new Sony PS5 gaming console.  Pictured below are Jonathan Carmody and Savva Ivanov opening the newly delivered gaming console.

In November 2022, the students organised a BBQ to raise the money for the PS5. The response from the Oakleigh Grammar community has been overwhelming, and we thank Coles, at Oakleigh Central, for their generous support.

The E-games club at Oakleigh Grammar is excited about the PS5. E-club members believe it will provide a better gaming experience and attract more students to join the club. They have even started planning tournaments and competitions.

Apart from being a source of entertainment, playing video games can have positive effects on students. It can improve their problem-solving skills, decision-making abilities, hand-eye coordination, and social skills. By supporting the E-games club, the School is providing a platform for students to explore their passion for gaming and learn new skills.

The initiative taken by the students at Oakleigh Grammar to raise funds for a the PS5 for their E-games club is commendable. It shows that students are not just interested in playing games but are also proactive in their approach to achieving their goals.

The Sony PS5 will provide a better gaming experience for the students and help in the growth of the E-games club. Oakleigh Grammar is committed to encouraging students in their passions through co-curricular activities and we hope to see more such initiatives in the future.

In 2022, our League of Legends Team came fourth in the Victorian secondary school competition. With the same team members this year, and several practice sessions over the past few months, and are hoping to go even further in the finals this year.

LOTE

LOTE Greek classes were dedicated to the Greek Independence Day and Hellenic Culture throughout March.  Students had the opportunity to learn about the Greek Revelation as well as about the contribution of Greeks all around the world throughout the years.

The Junior School students in the Explain and Elaborate phases took learning out of the classroom.  They practised their research skills and proudly presented their projects on different topics regarding the Greek language, literature, and history.  Independently, the students investigated the different topics and collectively learned from each other in class.

The Year 3 students explained a plethora of reasons for learning the Greek language and how it benefits their overall education and connection with others.  The Year 4 students enriched their knowledge in Greek history by sharing information on the heroes and heroines of the Greek Revolution (25th March 1821).  The Year 5 students were focused on the life of the national Greek poet Dionysios Solomos and his contribution to the Greek Revolution through his poetry and especially the “Hymn to Liberty” that became the Greek National Anthem.
