Hoodie's Up for Autism

Tuesday 4th April

On Tuesday 4th of April, wear your school jumper and put your hoodie up to celebrate people with Autism!

Note: this is not a free-dress day. You must wear your school jumper!

Amaze celebrates Hoodie Up every year in April during World Autism Acceptance Month. Hoodie Up is a campaign to show understanding, acceptance and support for the Autistic community.  Whether you’re Autistic, love someone who is or just want to stand in solidarity with the autism community, join us in putting your Hoodie Up and celebrating the diversity autism brings to our world.

Why hoodies?

Some Autistic people experience sensory sensitivities and can become overloaded by stimuli in their environment. Wearing their hoodie up means they can block out bright lights and busy environments which helps calm them.

Understanding autism

Around 1 in 100 Australians is autistic and 85% of the community has a personal connection with an autistic person.

Autism affects the way individuals interact with others and how they experience the world around them. Every autistic person is different, which means that each person has unique strengths and challenges.

“If you’ve met one person on the autism spectrum, you’ve met one person on the spectrum.” - Prof Stephen Shore

Autistic people may have:

  • challenges with communicating and interacting with others
  • repetitive and different behaviours, moving their bodies in different ways
  • strong interest in one topic or subject
  • unusual reactions to what they see, hear, smell, touch or taste
  • preferences for routines and dislike change.

So wear your school jumper and put your hoodie up on Tuesday!
