Grade 5 Home Learning Snapshot - Term 3/Week 2

Writing

Students are going to continue their journey as writers exploring each of the ‘6+1 traits of Writing’, in depth to strengthen their writing skills. This week they will practise using the ‘Ideas’ trait and take simple ideas and work them in new and clever ways. We will use the text ‘The Secret Knowledge of Grown-Ups’ by David Wisniewski to examine this concept and uncover the ‘real’ truths about the rules grown-ups give their children. For example: Rule #61 Don’t play with your food. Official Reason: It’s messy and rude. The Truth: They’re afraid the food will want to… Play with you! Students will take the ideas from the text and use their imagination and creativity to develop their own set of rules and truths for writing.

Reading

During Home Learning 2.0 it will be important for students to continue reading daily. In addition to reading during their scheduled tasks they should also be completing independent reading each night. This week students will be focussing on their fluency when reading out loud. This involves many dimensions that can help students to gather a deeper understanding of what they are reading. The elements that will be a focus this week are; pausing, intonation, blending, expression and phrasing. During the reading Google Meet mini lesson students will set a fluency reading goal with their teacher and will work on that goal when reading throughout the coming weeks. Students will need to practise reading out loud during this time - whether they call a friend and read to them or read to family members or even pets!

Maths

For the first 6 weeks of Term three, students will learn about fractions and decimals. On Monday and Tuesday students will complete an online assessment and poster demonstrating their knowledge of fractions. In our mini lesson on Wednesday, students will participate in a problem solving activity focusing on students’ ability to explain their thinking and reasoning. Later in the week, students will make their own fraction walls which will be used as a valuable resource throughout the unit.

Inquiry

In our UOI this term, students will start their investigation into, ‘Where We Are in Time and Place’. An important learning purpose in this unit will be an understanding around motivation and what motivates individuals to stand up to create change. Looking back through Australia’s history students will research the events and lives of important Australian ‘movers and shakers’.

Students will start the term by gaining a sense of place through mapping Australia from two different perspectives. To gain a greater appreciation of time students will create a timeline of important events in Australia’s history and relate these to important Australian figures who have had an impact on our lives. Important concepts that students will be developing will be an understanding about motivation and how different perspectives lead to different outcomes. They will be learning about why things are the way they are and what rights people have or should have.

Word Study

Students will continue to practice 30 "codes" of the English language through watching videos uploaded by their class teacher. They will also continue to explore a reading or spelling rule which will help them when they decode or write words. There are 30 rules that students will gradually explore through their primary schooling. A rule is introduced through an explicit lesson on a Monday and then a "bootcamp" begins where the students practise the new skill or information over a period of 2 weeks until it becomes "automatic" in their brains.

On Monday students will learn Rule 7, they will then "bootcamp" this rule for the next few weeks. This is where the students practise the new skill until it becomes "automatic" in their brains.

Wellbeing

The ability to self-regulate is a skill which is important to all of us especially in our current situation. We all come across situations that test us from time to time. When we are able to recognise our feelings we are able to do something about them and get ourselves to a healthy place. An important area of emphasis this week will be on language and strategies that students can use when they find themselves in the different zones. This week’s activity will involve linking language to feelings and expressing these emotions through idioms.
