Grade 5 Snapshot

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to Home Learning Version 2.0. Although we know this comes with complications and challenges WE WILL ALL get through this together. We are excited to continue supporting your child during their 2020 learning journey.

Thanks for your feedback during parent teacher interviews. We have been working hard this week to plan for Home Learning 2.0 and will continue to keep it simple, accessible and engaging for the students. Below is some important information to help you prepare for your child’s learning next week.

Daily Schedule

Students will continue to receive a daily schedule the night before which will include their times for their Google Meet sessions. We will continue to differentiate learning through our online meetings and the work that is posted on Google Classroom. Please remind your child to check Google meet times as groups may have changed from last term and may change over the course of Home Learning 2.0. It is IMPORTANT that students are logged into their school email account, for example jeffress@schools.vic.edu.au for them to be able to access work. If it comes up saying they need permission to view the file (that will be because they are logged in to a different gmail account).

Use of Books

Students can work in two workbooks - completing reading at one end and writing at the other. In their grid books, they can do maths questions at one end and word study questions at the other. Inquiry work will be completed on spare paper and online.

Google Meets

Google Meet sessions will commence each day at 9.15 and finish at 10.40. Please see the following expectations regarding Google Meet sessions:

Students must ensure that their camera is on at ALL times. This way we know that students are listening and actively engaged. If a student is having difficulty with their camera, parents may be called to check on their internet connection.

Students are expected to be on time for their Google Meet mini lessons in order to minimise disruptions and avoid missing valuable learning.

Students have signed the ‘Acceptable Use of the Internet and Digital Technologies Agreement’ and are expected to adhere to this policy and the Online Learning Policy at all times.

Application and Programs needed

Check your child has the following apps, if NOT please DOWNLOAD them:

  • Essential Assessment
  • Mathletics
  • Epic
  • Google Suite - Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Sheets, Google Meets, Google Classroom, Google Drive
  • iMovie
  • Explain Everything Whiteboard

Please let your child’s teacher know if you need any support with these apps or your child has forgotten any of their passwords.

Specialist Program

In Term 3 the specialist teachers will each have a Google Classroom where students can ask questions and upload tasks for the specialist program.

Students will need to GO on to Google Classroom and add the below Class Codes:

  • Visual Arts Class code: hmgg44x
  • PE Class code: v56kngb
  • Performing Arts codes: 5A- oicwkgH, 5B- oumetex, 5C- hgvqtmh, 5D- dl2rcgr

Homework

In our Compass post on Friday we provided you with a Reading log for students to record their reading each night. It is an expectation that students will be reading each night for a minimum of 20 minutes. They will also have Mathletics tasks to complete 3 times a week for at least 30 minutes.

Enrichment Program

The Maths Enrichment program that was offered at the end of Term 1 will be postponed. We will continue to differentiate your child’s learning through Google Meets and the ‘Ski Runs’ so that they are being supported and extended.

High Standard of Work

We will be introducing a checklist of questions students will need to go through at the end of each day to ensure all their tasks have been completed to a high standard.

Please let your child's teacher know if you have any questions or concerns.

Regards,

Grade 5 Team
