Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

On Monday, teachers became the learners at St Joseph's and grew in their understanding of providing effective feedback to students.

Effective feedback goes well beyond comments such as 'Good work' or 'Well done'. Effective feedback is designed to improve students learning throughout the learning process with the right feedback throughout. This drives a student's current performance towards achieving the learning goal.

Giving students feedback throughout the learning process means that students can improve their work, take their learning forward, and improve their performance.  This cannot be achieved with a mark at the end of the learning. A mark of seven out of ten for a piece of writing does not help students know how to improve.

You will recall in previous school newsletters that students are using learning intentions and success criteria. This makes it very clear to each student what they are learning and why, and what they need to do to be successful. Effective feedback is aligned to the learning intentions and success criteria. During the learning process, teachers and students can use the success criteria to provide effective feedback to students.

Even at the Kindergarten level, students have begun to self assess using success criteria, and are learning how they can improve their work with effective feedback.

Kindergarten Learning Intention for Writing

Kindergarten Success Criteria and 'Bump It Up Wall'.

There are four examples for the students to see from a 'Basic Introduction' through to a 'Wow Introduction'.

The students have their names on the pencils (blurred out for this photo). After a writing lesson, students place their pencils where they think their writing level is. They can then see what they need to do to improve and go to the next level. The teacher also checks the levels and talks with students about how they can improve for the next lesson.

For all things at St Joseph’s, give thanks!

Principal Appraisal

Mrs Jennifer Charadia

St Joseph's Catholic Parish Primary School, Bulli

Dear Parents and Carers

As part of the Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong (CEDoW) Principal Professional Development Planning and Review Process, an Appraisal occurs for each Principal every four years of his or her contract. This provides system and community accountability that is aligned with the School and Improvement process, focusing on the Principal’s leadership achievements and strengths, as well as identify areas for growth and development and future directions.

The Appraisal will be occurring for your Principal Mrs Jennifer Charadia over the coming weeks and parents are invited to participate via a short survey. We use an electronic tool for the administration of this survey with Parents and Staff using a link to SurveyMonkey.

Please click or type this link for your survey.

Surveys need to be completed before Friday, 28 August 2020. The information you provide will be kept confidential to the Panel that will be undertaking the Appraisal. If you are unable to access the electronic tool, hard copies of the survey will be available from your school’s front office.

Another part of the process is a Panel Review, which will be occurring on Wednesday, 16 September. The Panel is comprised of an external Educational Consultant, a peer Principal and a CEDoW Leadership member. On this day the Parish Priest, members of Staff, Students and a Parent representative group (approx. 12 parents) will meet with the panel. If you would like to be considered for inclusion in the parent group interview which will be scheduled for approximately 40 minutes, please speak with Mrs Jennifer Charadia.

I wish to thank you in advance for taking part in this important process which is aimed at continual enhancement of the Catholic Education provided at St Joseph's.

Yours sincerely

Carolyn Hadley

Head of Human Resource Services
