Melba

2022 has been another fantastic year for students, staff, and families of Melba House.

70 year seven students commenced their High School journey with a mix of excitement and nerves. There was also much excitement also surrounding the Year twelve Melba cohort who were embarking on their final year at Blackburn High School. Melba House welcomed new and returning staff across the year including Jason Ziino, Madeleine Weatherley, Kieren Bambery, and Kim Winton.

As always, the start of the year was incredibly busy and this year was no exception. Whilst settling in with new classes, subjects, and teachers, there were many other exciting things happening to start the year off including House Swimming and House Performing Arts.

Placing 2nd at House Swimming was a solid achievement and built momentum leading into the House Performing Arts festival where the Melba students produced a simply brilliant performance of Mean Girls. It was great to see the participation, enjoyment, and cohesion of the Melba students during both of these House events. Year 7 Camp was held for the first time at Kinglake Adventure Camp with Melba and Freeman students attending the camp together.

The Year 7 students were provided with a range of opportunities to form friendships and get to know their teachers.

Term 1 concluded with the House Athletic carnival and for the first time since the inception of the House system, Melba House came first in a landslide victory.

Our students performed to an excellent standard and a great day was enjoyed by all.

The 2022 Melba Student Leadership team has been pivotal in providing student voice, improving student connections, and enhancing the overall student experience at Blackburn High School.

2022 saw the full return of inter-school sports, incursions, excursions, camps, and other events. It was fantastic to see students and staff thriving once again with the full academic and extra-curricular programs taking place. In term 3, Melba House hosted the annual fundraiser to raise much needed funds for the Eastern Emergency Relief Network. In addition to this, a food drive was also facilitated to contribute supplies to Christmas hampers. The fundraising day consisted of a carnival theme with a range of activities taking place at lunchtime including a BBQ, Just Dance & Karaoke, Cornhole and a ring toss.

The endeavor, participation, and enjoyment demonstrated by the Melba students this year has been so great to see.

Best of luck to our year 12 students with their future endeavors and I wish everyone a safe holiday break. We look forward to working with all of our Melba students and their families in 2023.
